Egerton Ryerson and the Indian Residential Schools: A Contextual Perspective
September 20, 2025 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm
Free

The figure of Egerton Ryerson has been vilified as “the architect of the Indian Residential Schools.” But many do not know his history with Mississauga of the Credit or that he was given a Mississauga name in gratitude for his ministry among them. Or that the idea of residential schools had been a matter of public discussion for almost thirty years before Ryerson penned the 1847 letter for which he is arraigned. There is lots to learn!
Prof. Peter Wyatt, United Church minister and former principal of Emmanuel College, will bring a PowerPoint presentation on Ryerson in context to the Deer Park Public Library on Saturday, September 20, at 2 p.m. The Library is located at 40 St. Clair Ave., east of the Yonge intersection.
