Are you going to BE?

September 10, 2022

Do you like books?
Would you like to meet some authors?
Would you want to have tea with your neighbours?

If you answered ‘yes’ to any of these, you will want to be part of the inaugural “Are you going to BE {Book Event”?” September 10th, a community event at Richmond Hill United Church.
Proceeds from this event are for the diverse social programs Richmond Hill United supports in our community.
A call for donations of books brought more than ten thousand books which have been gathered and sorted. Many people need to find good homes for their much beloved book!
There are many genres: popular fiction, classics, romance, mystery, spy, sci-fi….biographies, hobbies, self help books, cookbooks, gardening, environment, nature, science, history, business….
Do you know any children? Several retired teachers have given many excellent books – picture books, early readers, bedtime stories… Many opportunities to spark the love of reading and learning.
Award winning independent bookstore Blue Heron Books will be selling the published books by authors Tish Cohen, Bianca Marais, Rachel McMillan, Lucy Black and John Ota. Come meet the authors as they speak and sign books. This is an excellent opportunity for you to pick up gifts for any occasion. (December is just around the corner)
A “must see” is the presentation on handwriting analysis by Elaine Chantal and Peter Dennis. It is both educational and entertaining. You will not be disappointed.

John Ota, author of The Kitchen is the keynote speaker at 3:30. You will be entertained as you learn about the evolution of the kitchen and appliances as John takes you along on his journey as he visited kitchens in the U.S. and Canada in preparation to design his own kitchen. You will not want to miss this personal and entertaining presentation. Purchase one of his books and have John personalize it for you.
The Children’s corner is the place to visit to make your own bookmark and participate in Storytime.
The UCW are serving refreshments in the sunlit Garden Room. Relax with a refreshment, visit, stay and read or browse through the selection of cookbooks (proceeds will go directly to UCW initiatives).
The Community Room will be brimming with activity. The self-published authors Vince Conville, Kim Fluxgold and Peter Dennis will be selling and signing their books.
A special RHUC Outreach Project is selling Orange Shirt Day t-shirts to show our support for the National Truth and Reconciliation Day. These t-shirts were sourced from a local indigenous designer and will be available in sizes S, M, L & XL.
Come meet Metis Beading Artist Kathy Morgan. She will be doing demonstrations and will be offering items for sale. Michelle Zikovitz will have a basketry demonstration in the morning. Other artists will be doing demos too!
A sneak peak of Richmond Hill Artists Studio Art Walk happening September 24 will be on display and for purchase.
We’ve consulted the local Village of Richmond Hill Business Improvement Area and discovered 11 restaurants you can walk to from RHUC! Come early and choose your book purchases and then meet a friend for lunch, between attending author readings
The books are priced very reasonably – a dollar for paperbacks and a twoonie for hard covers; there are quantity discounts. Some very special books will be part of a HAT – Hourly Auction Table. Groups of books will be offered each hour to the highest bidder.
