DESCRIPTION:Holding differences Creatively in the Public Forum with Facilitators Mardi Tindal\, former moderator of The United Church of Canada and Michael Saver\, consultant. Both are facilitators with The Centre for Courage and Renewal. This is a free online Zoom event being hosted by Beach United Church.\nAs we approach the June provincial election\, the toxic legacy of the U.S. insurrection\, the misinformation disseminated by the so-called ‘Freedom Convoy’\, and continued anxiety about the COVID – 19 pandemic\, have all had an impact on citizens of Ontario. Parliamentary democracy depends on robust discussion of differing ideas\, values and perspectives on societal issues in ways that affirm connections\, respect differences\, and de-escalate patterns of harm.\nWe will explore how to create and hold a safe and brave space for such discussion\, a space characterized by courage\, trust\, integrity and respect. Practices that enhance our ability to listen deeply\, to respond more than react\, and to hold the tension of differences will be offered. DESCRIPTION:Life can be challenging and uncertain! Living in a COVID-19 world has added to that uncertainty and complicates our ability to cope with life’s most common challenges. Join facilitator Mary Thomson MSW\, RSW\, RP (Registered Social Worker & Psychotherapist) in this 2-part series\, as she helps us to deal with the continued uncertainty of these times. \nThis is an opportunity to name the uncomfortable emotions that are surfacing\, discuss the strategies that we are currently using\, and learn ways to cope more effectively. Mary will explore how to work with our thoughts and values to create flexibility\, resilience\, and hope. We will learn some principles and tools from Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) so that we can move gradually from merely surviving to thriving. \nSession One: Tuesday\, March 1\, 7:00-9:00pm \nHow Are We Doing? Dealing with Uncertainty\, Loss and Change in a Not-Quite-Post-Covid-19-World: In this session we will reflect on the uncertainty we are experiencing; name and seek to understand our emotions and what may be contributing to our stress; reflect on the ways in which we are coping and on how we can do so even more effectively. \nSession Two: Wednesday\, March 9\, 7:00-9:00pm \nWhere Are We Going? Building Resilience and Finding Hope on the Way to a Still Uncertain Future: In this session we will reflect on such things as resilience and radical acceptance. We will learn how to struggle less with things that we can’t control\, how to be mindful and present with our experiences\, how to develop self-compassion and the ability to remain calm in the storm\, and how to exercise kindness and gratitude.

We dig deep into two examples of Othering—anti-Asian and anti-Muslim hate. \nb. DESCRIPTION:Join us for the launch of “A History of Contemporary Praise & Worship: Understanding the Ideas That Reshaped the Protestant Church” (2021 Baker Academic) by Lester Ruth (research professor of Christian worship\, Duke University) and Lim Swee Hong (Deer Park Associate Professor of Sacred Music\, Emmanuel College). \nNew forms of worship have transformed the face of the American church over the past fifty years. Drawing on a wide range of primary sources\, including interviews with dozens of important stakeholders and key players\, this volume by two worship experts offers the first comprehensive history of Contemporary Praise & Worship. The authors provide insight into where this phenomenon began and how it reshaped the Protestant church. They also emphasize the span of denominational\, regional\, and ethnic expressions of contemporary worship\, taking into account the liturgical dynamics involved it its emergence and the dynamics that led to its growth. The authors show that Contemporary Praise & Worship came about through theological reflection on the Bible\, not merely as the result of cultural impulses. Events in Canada are critical to the history\, especially in the origins. \nThis book will be of interest to professors and students of worship\, worship pastors\, leaders of contemporary worship services\, liturgical scholars\, and church and cultural historians.
