DESCRIPTION:The discovery of children’s graves on the grounds of a Residential school in Kamloops last summer\, motivated many settler Canadians to learn more about Canada’s relationship with Indigenous nations. Since then\, we have worked to learn the Truth about the anguish our government’s actions have created and the many promises made and broken.\nLearning the Truth leads us to question how we might Reconcile.\nIn 2021\, a group of leaders – Indigenous and Settler – acting on their commitment to create a more respectful and just relationship\, came together to answer that question. They created the Citizens Group for the 1% Indigenous Peoples Fund and have created a proposal that would serve to help Settlers and Indigenous people move into a more just and equitable relationship in a very concrete way – a way beyond words and gestures.\nRoyal York Road United Church will honour the second National Day of Truth and Reconciliation with a workshop on their proposal.\nPlease join us for an online session with one of the members of the Citizens Group\, Harry Oussoren. The event will be recorded and posted to our YouTube channel. \nUpcoming Speakers: \nSunday\, September 25th – Robin Buyers has just confirmed she will kick off our “Making a Difference” Speaker series after worship on Sunday Sept. 25 with a short history of the Noojimo’Iwewin Gitigaan/Healing Garden adjacent to St. Matt’s and how the Indigenous People’s Solidarity Group and community Garden Crew volunteers are modelling how even small urban spaces may become sites of reconnection with Creation and respect for Indigenous spirituality. \nRobin Buyers is a Canadian Queer\, white settler with hidden disabilities. Her roots are in the Ross Clan of Scottish highlands\, Wales\, and England. She has been active in Indigenous solidarity work in the Americas for more than 30 years\, including as a Kairos Blanket Exercise facilitator\, Co-Chair of the Americas Policy Group\, frontline Community Peacemaker Teams Colombia and Turtle Island Solidarity worker\, and Co-founder of Coalition for a Public Inquiry into Ipperwash. She retired as a Community Work Professor at George Brown College in 2016\, and has since focused on neighbourhood and Land-based work with the Indigenous Peoples Solidarity Group (IPSG) and Noojimo’iwewin Gitigaan at St. Matthew’s United Church. She will speak about her evolution as an activist in the Indigenous justice movement\, tell the story of the IPSG and Noojimo’iwewin Gitigaan\, and share the vision of Noojimo’iwewin Gitigaan and the coast-to-coast-to coast National Healing Forest initiative of which it is a part. SUMMARY:Rethinking Preaching Conference 2022: Intercultural Preaching
DESCRIPTION:The Centre for Religion and Its Contexts at Emmanuel College and Shining Waters Regional Council are pleased to host the second “Rethinking Preaching’ Conference with this year’s theme\, “Intercultural Preaching.” The challenge of intercultural preaching in the midst of social crises defined by racism\, colonialism\, and ecological crisis has gripped preachers in all parts of the world. What’s more\, online worship and the use of technology are on the rise and have contributed to cultural shifts that challenge long-held assumptions about worship. All prompts us to rethink preaching. The Centre and Shining Waters invite seasoned and new preachers\, students of homiletics\, and participants who seek to “rethink preaching” to join our conference in 2022. \nOur keynote speakers\, Prof. Jerusha Neal (Duke Divinity School) and the Rev. Michael Blair (General Secretary of the United Church of Canada) will be joining us. These special guests along with two responders\, four workshop leaders\, and racialized preachers who engage in intercultural preaching research will help us rethink and explore intercultural preaching for today.

DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wednesday February 9th at 10:30am on Zoom for a special Meet U @ The Zoom Room speaker event with renowned speaker Fred Fox on behalf of his brother and the Terry Fox Foundation. \nMore about Fred Fox:\nFred Fox never imagined that he would take part in one of the most inspiring stories in Canadian history when he watched his brother Terry set out on his Marathon of Hope in April of 1980. He had the opportunity to join Terry a couple of times on the road that summer and watch as Canadians embraced his brother in a remarkable way. Fred’s commitment to Terry’s cancer research legacy never wavered\, leading the Terry Fox Foundation’s BC Office from 1994 to 2001 and then moving to the National Office in 2009 to serve as Manager of Supporter Relations. \nAll welcome to hear how Fred supports cancer research and continued dedication to his brother’s legacy.
