SUMMARY:Book Launch | "The Poetry of Belonging" by Iris J. Gildea
DESCRIPTION:Emmanuel College’s Centre for Religion and Its Contexts and the University of St. Michael’s College in the University of Toronto invite you to the launch of Iris J. Gildea’s book\, The Poetry of Belonging: Healing With the Language of the Wound. \nWhere: Emmanuel College Chapel (EM319) and Online \nGildea offers a radical reframing of trauma theory through embodiment\, earth-based spirituality and poetic inquiry. Gildea works with her own poetically mediated memories as creative fragments to enter and explore an embodiment of liminal realms and what she calls ‘the language of the wound.’ The Poetry of Belonging is a part of the “Doing Radical Trauma Work” series from The Mad and Crip Theology Press.

SUMMARY:Lenten Book Study
DESCRIPTION:Everyone is invited to a 6-week Lenten book study. It will be held on Zoom weekly on Mondays from 4:15-5:45pm\, beginning on Monday\, February 19th. It will run until March 25. \nWe will be discussing The Last Week by Marcus J. Borg and John Dominic Crossan. Using Mark’s gospel as a guide\, they present a day-by-day account of Jesus’ final week of life. They intentionally play on the term «passion»\, opposing Jesus’ passion for the Justice of God\, a fair share for all\, against the familiar emphasis on his «suffering» (Passion Week). The book sets the events of the week into the political and cultural context of the time; this realism should inspire insight and lively discussion. \nDetails and Zoom link at https://bloorstreetunited.org/churchsocial-calendar/?event_id=59847&event_date=2024-02-19

SUMMARY:Midweek Midrash
DESCRIPTION:Bloor Street Church is offering a new opportunity for dialogue\, learning\, and community. Midweek Midrash is a dialogue that looks at different kinds of ‘texts’ – such as a Brené Brown podcast\, a movie\, a lecture by someone like Thomson Highway\, or a book. MM will happen on Zoom\, two Wednesday evenings per month (1st and 3rd) at 7pm. There is no commitment to come every week\, just drop in when you can. \nLet us know by emailing our minister\, Russ Daye\, at russ@bloorstreetunited.org if you would like to be added to the contact group for MM and we’ll send you the Zoom information in advance of each session\, and let you know what our ‘text’ will be. You may want listen to\, watch or read it in advance – but don’t worry if you can’t. We’ll read or play part of it during the session. \nAll welcome! Hosted by the Adaptive Conversations planning group at Bloor Street United Church.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for the launch of David Kim-Cragg’s book\, Water from Dragon’s Well: The History of a Korean-Canadian Church Relationship (2022\, McGill-Queen’s University Press)\, on Monday\, October 3 at 7 p.m. EDT. The launch is online and free. Kim-Cragg Emm 9T9 is both a sessional lecturer at Emmanuel College and minister at St. Matthew’s United Church in Richmond Hill. \nKim-Cragg will be joined by Phyllis D. Airhart (professor emerita\, Emmanuel College)\, Dr. Keith Carlson (Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Indigenous and Community-Engaged History and director of the Peace and Reconciliation Centre\, University of the Fraser Valley) and Kang-hee Han (sessional lecturer of Christian history\, Hanshin University) for a conversation about his book. \nAbout the Book\nA Canadian-built mission house in the heart of Seoul became the heart of the emerging South Korean democratization movement\, while a Korean minister rose to serve as the spiritual leader of Canada’s largest Protestant denomination. The century-long Korean-Canadian church relationship has had a lasting influence on Korean society and on the culture and mission of The United Church of Canada\, helping to crack the colonial foundations of Canadian Protestantism. \nWater from Dragon’s Well explores the connection between the Korean Christian community and the Canadian church and its missionaries from the 1890s to the present.
