SUMMARY:Reconciliation: Towards 2035
DESCRIPTION:The Manitou Intentional Learning Community cordially invites you to attend Reconciliation: Towards 2035\, presented by Sara Stratton\, the United Church of Canada Reconciliation and Indigenous Justice Animator\, on Monday\, September 8\, 2025\, via Zoom. \nTo register\, please go to Manitou Intentional Learning Community  https://manitoulearningcommunity.com \nIt’s been 10 years since the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada released its Final Report and Calls to Action. Since then\, we have also received the Final Report and Calls to Justice on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women\, Girls\, and 2S People\, and the Final Report and Sacred Obligations on unmarked burial sites and missing/disappeared Indigenous children. Within the United Church\, we’ve committed to becoming an actively anti-racist church; passed Remit One\, making room for an autonomous Indigenous organization within the United Church of Canada; and begun a conversation about reparations for wrongful harms. What do all these things mean for our path of reconciliation? How will we move forward in a meaningful and constructive way? Join UCC Reconciliation and Indigenous Justice Animator Sara Stratton for a brief information session and longer strategic conversation. \nSara Stratton serves the United Church of Canada as Reconciliation and Indigenous Justice Animator\, and is active in the church’s commitment to becoming an anti-racist denomination. She is a Newfoundlander\, raised in Corner Brook and shaped by her family’s almost 300-year history in Northwestern Bonavista Bay\, part of the traditional territory of the Beothuk. She holds a PhD in history from York University\, is an avid cook and birdwatcher\, and is married to Kelly.

SUMMARY:Let's Connect: Lay Leaders Webinar - Communication\, Effective Disagreement\, and the Fall into Conflict
DESCRIPTION:Communication\, Effective Disagreement\, and the Fall into Conflict\nWednesday\, January 22\, 2025\n7:00 – 8:30 p.m. on Zoom \nFacilitator: Dr. Betty Pries\nStaff Facilitators: Diane Matheson-Jimenez and Melody Duncanson-Hales \nDue to high demand\, “Where two or three are gathered\, there is Jesus and Conflict” is back! \nChallenges emerge in congregational life when healthy disagreements tip over into conflict and entrenchment. SUMMARY:Town Hall Info Session and Regional Meeting to Vote on Remit
DESCRIPTION:Town Hall Info Session\nJoin us on Tuesday\, September 19 starting at 6 p.m. for our town hall information session\, when we will gather on Zoom with our friends from Canadian Shield Regional Council to review and discuss the remit to remove structural barriers to developing and sustaining an autonomous Indigenous Church. Special guest the Rev. Michael Blair\, General Secretary\, will be with us to join in the discussion. \nThis information session is open to all those interested in learning more about the remit vote\, both for your own community of faith’s vote or our regional response. Please register below to attend. \n  \n \n \n \n \n \n Regional Meeting to Vote on Remit\nFollowing the information session\, Shining Waters regional members will stay online and vote on our regional response to the remit. We anticipate ending by 8 p.m. \nThis is a Category 3 Remit\, and so requires a vote by every regional council and each pastoral charge’s governing body. If a regional council or a pastoral charge does not register a vote\, that is considered a vote against the proposal. \nThere is one question to be voted on\, as follows: \nDoes the regional council agree to amend the Basis of Union to reflect: \n\nThat The United Church of Canada will be organized as follows (1) a three-council structure\, consisting of communities of faith\, regional councils and a Denominational Council*; and (2) an autonomous National Indigenous Organization; and\nThat once the new autonomous National Indigenous Organization is established within The United Church of Canada\, it will have its own mechanisms to make any future changes to its structure and processes\, and\, therefore will not be subject to the remit process under section 7.4.1 of the Basis of Union**; and\nThe changes required for the establishment of the autonomous National Indigenous Organization.\n\n  \nOnce the regional vote has been completed we will submit the regional response form to the General Council Office. \n  \nFor more information and to register please see our website here.

SUMMARY:Getting Started in Stewardship
DESCRIPTION:Getting Started in Stewardship\nTuesday\, February 21 – 1 p.m. EST\nPresented on Zoom \nJoin United Church people from across the country to learn some stewardship first principles.\nStart with an on-line 2-hour course that answers questions like: What is stewardship all about anyway? Isn’t stewardship just a churchy word for fundraising? Why do people give\, and why would they give to our church? What can we do to encourage greater generosity? \nThe practical assignments that follow will help you reflect on giving and generosity as part of your faith\, gather and interpret some of the giving data from your community of faith\, and build a stewardship team in order to start making stewardship a priority in your community of faith. \nCompletion of this course is a great first step before participating in Stewardship Best Practices\, which will be offered next in March 2023. \nRegistration link – https://forms.office.com/r/idCxNLcBeg \nAny questions? SUMMARY:DreamworkCanada -- 2022 Workshops
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to be able to tell you about four Dreamwork Canada workshops we are planning\, beginning January 25. We have arranged them for Tuesday evenings for two hours—6:30 PM—8:30 PM\, ET. We hope this time slot will enable people in different time zones to join us. \nLike our other workshops these sessions will offer an approach to understanding our dreams as one of the ways God speaks to us. Participants will learn about dream interpretation within a Christian context using the concepts of Carl Jung. There will be an opportunity to explore participants’ own dreams as well as working with the dreams of others in a group context. \nMany of you have expressed an interest in learning how indigenous communities relate to their dreams. Our first workshop will feature a Mi’kmaq leader who will explain the Mi’kmaq approach. We hope to be able to connect with other indigenous communities in the future \nWORKSHOPS \nTues\, January 25 (6:30 – 8:30 pm ET)\nListening to Your Ancestors Through Your Dreams with Julie Lush \nTues\, February 1 (6:30 – 8:30 pm ET)\nSymbols in Dreams and Art Therapy with Mary Sanderson \nTues\, February 8 (6:30 – 8:30 pm ET)\nCreating With Your Dreams with Marybeth Leis Druery \nTues\, February 15 (6:30 – 8:30 pm ET)\nActive Imagination: An Inner Dialogue With Parts of our\nUnconscious Selves with Miriam Frey \nTo register\, follow this link: https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/bloor-street-united-church/events/dreamworks-exploring-gods-forgotten-language-2/ \nFor more about Dreamwork Canada\, please visit our website: www.dreamworkcanada.squarespace.com \nWorkshop Facilitators and Descriptions: \n1) January 25–Julie Lush\nJulie Pellissier-Lush\, a Lennox Island First Nation band member\, is an actress\, and bestselling author of ‘My Mi’kmaq Mother’\, Poet Laureate for PEI\, recipient of the Queens jubilee medal in 2013\, the Meritorious Service Medal recipient in 2017\, and the Senators 150 metal in April 2019. She writes\, acts\, and does photography to preserve the history and culture of the Mi’kmaq for future generations. Julie wrote the poems for the play ‘Mi’kmaq Legends’ in 2010 and they have been performed for the last 8 years on many different stages in the Atlantic region. It is her hope that this play will someday travel all over Canada and beyond so more people have the opportunity to learn about the rich Mi’kmaq history! Julie lives in PEI with her husband Rick\, her five children\, and her Granddaughter Miah. \nListening to your Ancestors through your Dreams\nCome and learn how to hear the messages being sent to you in your dreams from your ancestors. Just like the Creator\, they are always there guiding you and keeping you safe by sending you messages while you sleep. Learn what they are trying to tell you. \n2) February 1—Mary Sanderson\nMary Sanderson is an Art Therapist. She worked for fifteen years with refugees\, particularly at The Canadian Centre for Victims of Torture and for five years at the Okimaw Ohci Healing Lodge\, a federal penitentiary for native women in south west Saskatchewan. Both populations strengthened her belief that God speaks to us through Art. \nSymbols in Dreams and Art Therapy\nAs an Art Therapist\, I have always believed that spontaneous art is one of the (many) ways in which God speaks to us. Using specific symbols from Art Therapy\, this workshop will illustrate the significance of symbols and what they can tell us—in dreams or in waking life. \n3) February 8– Marybeth Leis Dreury \nMarybeth Leis Druery is a Spiritual Director and Expressive Arts facilitator who integrates creative expression with spiritual practices. Her winding path took her from being a high school Math teacher to co-founding the not-for-profit Student Open Circles\, where for 20 years she has facilitated university students from diverse backgrounds to explore self-awareness\, spirituality\, values\, leadership development\, and to volunteer in groups with Hamilton’s underserved communities. Marybeth deepens her journey through practices from diverse spiritual traditions\, art\, dreamwork\, body awareness\, and meditation \nCreating with Your Dreams\nListen for the voice of your soul\, emerging within your dreams. Engage with symbol through visual and written creative practices to uncover hidden parts of yourself as you journey towards wholeness. Experience guided expressive arts exercises to mine your dreams for meaning. You’ll create from found objects in response to a dream and play with images as a path to understanding your unfolding story. Try some simple steps for doing dream work on your own or in a group. Learn from each other in a judgement-free atmosphere of respect with no pressure to share. \nBring a written dream with you to engage in individual reflection and creating. You will have the option to share your dream in a small group exercise. In advance\, write out your dream in present tense\, double spaced. Bring your journal\, blank paper\, and pen or pencil. You will also have the option to use any crayons\, pastels\, markers\, paint\, glue or scissors you have. Bring a variety of found objects such as a jar\, egg carton\, cardboard\, objects from nature\, etc. No artistic experience or skill needed! \n4) February 15–Miriam Frey\nMiriam Frey is a spiritual director and the coordinator of the Ontario Jubilee program\, a training program for spiritual directors. Her journey of self-awareness began in earnest when she spent three years in Nairobi\, Kenya\, Africa\, volunteering as an administrative assistant with Mennonite Central Committee. There she met a Jungian analyst who introduced her to dreams as a way to listen for God’s presence and guidance. Miriam continues to attend to her spiritual growth through dreamwork\, the enneagram\, and meditation. \nActive Imagination: An Inner DialogueWith Parts of our Unconscious Selves\nWe will use the wisdom of Robert Johnson (1921-2018)\, a noted lecturer and Jungian analyst who studied at the Jungian Institute in Switzerland and at the Sri Aurobindo Ashram in India. He is the author of He\, She\, We\, Inner Work and Owning Your Own Shadow. Together we will learn the process of using the imagination to dialogue further with dream characters and images that reflect our inner world. \nTo register: https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/bloor-street-united-church/events/dreamworks-exploring-gods-forgotten-language-2/\nYou will see Bloor Street United Church mentioned in this link. Dreamwork Canada is an ecumenical group (Anglican\, Mennonite and United churches) but is grateful for Bloor Street’s support in allowing us to base our CanadaHelps’s registration with them. We appreciate ongoing support from The Mennonite New Life Centre.
