Bach to Nadia Boulanger and more! \nStefani Bedin is a Doctor of Musical Arts degree candidate at the University of Toronto\, where she also completed the Master of Music degree in Organ Performance and the Bachelor of Music degree in Music History and Theory (Honours) with a minor in historical keyboard. Stefani is currently the Associate Organist of St. Basil’s Catholic Parish\, the collegiate church of the University of Toronto’s St. Michael’s College. Committed to sharing the pipe organ’s music with diverse audiences\, Stefani is also the vice- president of the Royal Canadian College of Organists’ Toronto Centre executive. \n– \nDonations are welcomed\, and proceeds support the Beach United Church food programs.

DESCRIPTION:Beach United Church is excited to welcome young jazz singer John Amato (vocals)\, Jesse Whiteley (piano) and Matt Savard (bass) to their venue on Saturday\, May 6th at 4:30pm. \n— \nYoung jazz singer John Amato is already well on his way to a stellar career as one of toronto’s finest jazz singers.He grew up surrounded and influenced by jazz his whole life. With influences including Frank Sinatra\, Kurt Elling\, and Joe Williams\, Amato offers a mix of classic and contemporary approaches to the standards and songs he performs. As well as working with professional and student players throughout the city\, he is a singer in the Toronto All Star Big Band. \nJohn is also a choir lead at St. Aidan’s Anglican Church. \n— \nBeach United’s warm\, inviting hall serves as the perfect backdrop for this concert – donations are welcomed\, and proceeds support the Beach United Church food programs.

DESCRIPTION:We are excited to be hosting an EcoFair at Beach United on Saturday\, May 6th from 10am-2pm. We will have more information on vendors very shortly and will feature them on our social media accounts (Instagram / Facebook)\, so please stay tuned! \nWe have 35+ exhibitors/vendors\, everything from solar panel co-ops\, zero waste take out container company\, vegetarian food vendor\, info on green grants and how to access them\, EV’s and chargers\, recycling experts\, bike repair tent\, a beekeeper\, to butterfly and pollinator gardeners\, energy advisors and more. \nWe have booked 3 speakers\, Lana Goldberg from Environmental Defence Fund\, Paul Dowsett from The Pocket Change Project and Dr. Lori Stahlbrand from George Brown College talking about food sustainability. We will also have Nettie Cronish\, culinary instructor\, cookbook author and organic chef doing a demo of a vegetarian dish in our kitchen and a story time for young children. \nIt should be a great day and there should be something for everyone. DESCRIPTION:Join Afsana Gibson-Chowdhury for an enlightening and educational course on inclusion at Beach United on Saturday\, April 29th from 1:30-3pm. \nOntario is one of the most multicultural places to live in the world. With over 200 different cultures\, understanding cultural sensitivities has become one of the cornerstones in building successful and inclusive communities. This course provides a deep dive into cultural learning and how to engage with all members of our community effectively. \nObjectives:\n– Gain an understanding of how central culture is to us\n– Why are biases harmful and how can they be interrupted\n– How does self-awareness create awareness of others\n– Community engagement\n– Communication strategies \nABOUT AFSANA\nAfsana is a lawyer\, mediator and educator in Equity\, Diversity\, and Inclusion. She presents globally to help professionals and local communities gain a better understanding of EDI issues and how to foster the inclusion of marginalized communities. Afsana is a Beaches resident and her 3 children attend the local schools. Afsana provides an open and safe space for people to learn and grow awareness about people who are different from them.

We’ll examine her early years playing the coffeehouses in Yorkville and the start of her songwriting career. \nMonday\, April 24 at 10am: Joni’s breakthrough \nEven as the folk scene declined\, Joni’s engaging live performances and finely crafted songs attracted the attention of influential tastemakers and put her in the upper echelon of rock music. We’ll examine her first album Song To A Seagull\, her more accomplished follow-up\, Clouds\, and a third album\, Ladies of The Canyon\, which contained the massive radio hit\, “Big Yellow Taxi.” \nMonday\, May 1 at 10am: Rock stardom \nThe release of Blue in 1971 confirmed Joni’s legendary status in the popular music of the ’70s and cemented her image as the model of a singer-songwriter. We’ll examine the emergence of Joni’s new full band sound on her albums For The Roses and the mega-selling Court and Spark\, establishing a format that she would retain throughout the rest of her career. \nMonday\, May 8 at 10am: Jazz explorations \nHer fame assured\, Joni spent the latter half of the 1970s developing a new jazz-influenced approach to her music. She collaborated with legends like Charles Mingus\, Jaco Pastorius and Pat Metheny\, and produced a series of fascinating albums that never found large audiences: The Hissing Of Summer Lawns\, Hejira\, Don Juan’s Restless Daughter and Mingus. \nMonday\, May 15 at 10am: Navigating the changing pop landscape \nThe 1980s represented a sea change in the music business – and in Joni’s music too. After a return to form with her 1982 album Wild Things Run Fast\, she tried to update her sound and subject matter on Dog Eat Dog and Chalk Mark in a Rainstorm. Meanwhile\, a second marriage and a reunion with the daughter she gave up for adoption provided her with the personal stability to start revisiting her past. \n(Monday May 22 is the Victoria Day long weekend) \nMonday\, May 29 at 10am: Latest works and legacy projects \nOver the last 25 years\, Joni has balanced interesting new albums with orchestral remakes of her greatest hits. Her work as a talented singer-songwriter has landed her Folk Music Ontario’s Songs From The Heart Award (Political Category)\, opening slots for Canadian icons Gordon Lightfoot and Ron Hynes\, Top 3 placement in a nation-wide music competition (She’s The One)\, a Best Folk Album nomination (Toronto Independent Music Awards) and earned her an invitation to give a TEDx talk in 2014.

While the focus will be on the music\, we will also consider how recording techniques\, the music business\, the music of other artists\, and the larger culture of the 1960s affected John\, Paul\, George\, and Ringo as they created their classic works. Bonus\, if a live lecture is missed\, a pre-recorded version is available. \nLecture Outline \n1. MONDAY OCT.17 10AM – 12 The Quarry Men\nWe’ll examine the early lives of the members of the Beatles against the larger backdrop of postwar Liverpool. Their formative cultural influences\, from Elvis and Lonnie Donegan to the Goon Show\, will also be covered. From the formation of John Lennon’s teenage band The Quarry Men through early club dates in Liverpool\, we’ll look at the roots of the Beatles. \n2. MONDAY OCT.31 10AM – 12 The Early Beatles\nThe embryonic Beatles honed their craft at tough Liverpool suburban dances\, in Hamburg\, Germany\, and at the Cavern Club. When Brian Epstein signed on as their manager in early 1962\, the wheels were set in motion for their signing with EMI Records and their first hit singles. \n3. MONDAY NOV. 7 10 AM – 12 Beatlemania through 1964\nThe Beatles conquered England in 1963 and the rest of much of the world in 1964. In this class we’ll track the halcyon days of Beatlemania\, including their first appearance on the Ed Sullivan show and first film\, A Hard Day’s Night. \n4. MONDAY NOV.14 10AM-12 Transitional years – 1965-66\nIn 1965-66 the Beatles rewrote the rules of rock and roll music\, particularly in the recording studio. We’ll discuss their rapid artistic evolution in this period\, leading up to the end of their touring days and the release of their world-beating album Revolver. \n5. MONDAY NOV.21 10AM-12 Peak of creativity – 1967-68\nWith their innovative 1967 recordings including “Strawberry Fields Forever\,” the Beatles sealed their position at the top of pop music. The sudden death of their manager\, Brian Epstein\, in August 1967 threw the band into organizational turmoil. 1968 saw them creating a sprawling double album and starting their own company\, Apple. \n6. MONDAY NOV.28 10 AM-12 The Breakup – 1969-70\nThe ill-fated Get Back film project was an attempt to return to form\, but inter-band relations were in decline\, aided by drug abuse and simmering personal resentments. The final breakup was acrimonious and played out over years in the courts. Meanwhile the individual Beatles began their solo careers. We’ll discuss these later years and the Beatles’ legacy today.

While the focus will be on the music\, we will also consider how recording techniques\, the music business\, the music of other artists\, and the larger culture of the 1960s affected John\, Paul\, George\, and Ringo as they created their classic works. MONDAY OCT.17 10AM – 12 The Quarry Men\nWe’ll examine the early lives of the members of the Beatles against the larger backdrop of postwar Liverpool. Their formative cultural influences\, from Elvis and Lonnie Donegan to the Goon Show\, will also be covered. From the formation of John Lennon’s teenage band The Quarry Men through early club dates in Liverpool\, we’ll look at the roots of the Beatles. \n2. MONDAY OCT.31 10AM – 12 The Early Beatles\nThe embryonic Beatles honed their craft at tough Liverpool suburban dances\, in Hamburg\, Germany\, and at the Cavern Club. When Brian Epstein signed on as their manager in early 1962\, the wheels were set in motion for their signing with EMI Records and their first hit singles. \n3. MONDAY NOV. 7 10 AM – 12 Beatlemania through 1964\nThe Beatles conquered England in 1963 and the rest of much of the world in 1964. In this class we’ll track the halcyon days of Beatlemania\, including their first appearance on the Ed Sullivan show and first film\, A Hard Day’s Night. \n4. MONDAY NOV.14 10AM-12 Transitional years – 1965-66\nIn 1965-66 the Beatles rewrote the rules of rock and roll music\, particularly in the recording studio. We’ll discuss their rapid artistic evolution in this period\, leading up to the end of their touring days and the release of their world-beating album Revolver. \n5. DESCRIPTION:Beach United is delighted to host Jane Bunnett on sax and clarinet and Danae Olano on piano for our first Jazz and Reflection of the 2022/23 season. Theme: Gratitude. \nAn internationally acclaimed musician\, Jane Bunnett is known for her creative integrity\, improvisational daring\, and courageous artistry. Her exploration of Afro-Cuban melodies expresses the universality of music\, and her ability to embrace and showcase the rhythms and culture of Cuba has been ground-breaking. She has toured the world bringing her own special sound to numerous jazz festivals\, displaying her versatility as a flutist\, saxophone player\, and pianist. \nToronto-based pianist\, composer and arranger Danae Olano is originally from Cuba. Her career began to blossom while studying at the University of Arts in Havana. Her music is influenced by the Afro-Cuban music tradition\, Classical music\, Jazz\, Brazilian rhythms\, and more. She focusses on the legacy of the great Cuban pianists as well as the Masters of Jazz. Winner of two Juno Awards and Grammy Nominated\, Miss Olano holds multiple classical piano awards such as Musicalia and UNEAC. She is a versatile pianist\, founding member of the all-female band “Jane Bunnett and Maqueque”\, she also collaborates with other musicians in the city having the opportunity to learn new styles of music and enrich her own. She has performed in some of the world’s most prestigious jazz clubs\, including Birdland\, Blue Note and Bimhuis as well as in leading festivals such as the Monterrey\, Newport and Saratoga Jazz Festivals in addition to Jazz al Parque in Bogota. Olano not only writes music for her band\, she also collaborates with visual artists and has recently being awarded Best Original Soundtrack by the Capital Film Festival in Madrid for her collaboration on the experimental short-film “Sunlight Around the Corner: The Golden Sparrow”.
