SUMMARY:Faith in a Time of Genocide
DESCRIPTION:“Faith in a Time of Genocide” November 1-2\, 2024 is the United Network for Justice and Peace in Palestine and Israel (UNJPPI) national gathering in Toronto at the Hilton Garden Inn near the Pearson Airport. The program each day is from 8 am – 5 pm. There is a hotel room discount available until October 4th. Scholarships are available for students. People can also register for a pre-conference event on October 31 – training on the Palestine Land Exercise – at Trinity-St. Paul’s United Church\, Toronto . \nPlease register here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeFSYd8bJn3Oded_0hmVVmoHUc1SV_r-cMh7uoenzoaRe8J6w/viewform \nWe have an exciting line of up of speakers and leaders for the conference including: \nPalestinian Shadia Qubti will lead Bible study out of her lived experience. \nTariq Zoubi from Bethlehem will share his experience of growing up under occupation. \nWe will be able to engage with Ilan Pappe over zoom. He is a Jewish Israeli historian who has investigated the Israeli lobby and its 100 year campaign to silence voices for Palestinian human rights. \nWe’ll talk with General Council staff about United Church policy including the arms embargo campaign. \nWe will learn about Zionism\, Antisemitism and Islamaphobia. \nWe will learn about what it means to become an Apartheid-free church. \nAnd we will come away with a better understanding of international law and the impact on Canada of the International Court of Justice recent opinion. \nWe’ll meet amazing people from across Canada who are committed to acting for Palestinian human rights. \nDetails: \nCost $350 registration. plus you pay for your hotel room – $169 plus taxes per night. SUMMARY:Annual Gathering of United Network for Justice and Peace in Palestine and Israel (UNJPPI)
DESCRIPTION:In line with our United Church call to ‘Bold Discipleship\, Deep Spirituality\, Radical Justice’\, the theme of this year’s UNJPPI Gathering is “Responding to a Cry for Hope”. That is the Call which was issued in 2019 by Kairos Palestine and Palestinian Christians. \nThe UNJPPI Gathering will be in London\, Ontario from May 6 to 8\, with a community event at King’s College on May 5. \nIn an attempt to work in the spirit of decolonization\, most of our leadership will be Palestinian as we try to decolonize our work and listen to Palestinians talk to us out of their experience. They include:\n• Yara Shufani – a Palestinian Canadian on “Unity Uprisings 2021 – A Year Later”\n• Shadia Qubti – whose home is Nazareth and who has been studying in Canada since 2020. “Peace-building beyond dipping humus”.\n• Amal Alhaddad – who lives in Victoria and has recently emigrated from Gaza.\n• Rev. Dr. Munther Isaac\, from Bethlehem\, in via technology speaking on “Jesus’ call to be peace-builders”\n• Dr. Gabor Mate will also address our gathering by zoom on “Would you rather be illusioned or see things as they really are”.\n• Mariam Barghouti – a journalist from Ramallah on “What is happening right now? How are voices of Palestinians being silenced”. \nWe will learn together from what our resource people have to say as well as from each other as we share our experiences\, insights and understanding.\nWe hope to be encouraged and re-vitalized in our support of human rights for Palestinians and justice and peace for Israelis and Palestinians. \nFor more information\, check the Gathering website at https://unjppi.ca or email George Bartlett at g.bartlett@sympatico.ca.
