SUMMARY:Practical Theology amid Environmental Crises – Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the launch of “Practical Theology Amid Environmental Crises\,” edited by Pamela R. McCarroll (vice-principal and associate professor of practical theology\, Emmanuel College) and HyeRan Kim-Cragg (principal and Timothy Eaton Memorial Church Professor of Preaching\, Emmanuel College). \nFeaturing responders Prof. Bonne Miller-McLemore (Vanderbilt) and Prof. Hilda Koster (University of St. Michael’s College in the University of Toronto) and book contributors. \nThe field of practical theology has been slow to address the realities of environmental crises in its teaching\, research and practice. The present volume seeks to change this reality by bringing together key voices in the field from across the world to engage with the theme of practical theology amid environmental crises.

Through focused conversations\, personal reflection\, story-telling\, and small group sharing\, participants will engage in a life-giving experience. \nAbout the Workshop Leader\nAs adjunct faculty at Emmanuel College\, Rev. SUMMARY:Book Launch of David Kim-Cragg's "Water from Dragon’s Well: The History of a Korean-Canadian Church Relationship"
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the launch of David Kim-Cragg’s book\, Water from Dragon’s Well: The History of a Korean-Canadian Church Relationship (2022\, McGill-Queen’s University Press)\, on Monday\, October 3 at 7 p.m. EDT. The launch is online and free. Kim-Cragg Emm 9T9 is both a sessional lecturer at Emmanuel College and minister at St. Matthew’s United Church in Richmond Hill. \nKim-Cragg will be joined by Phyllis D. Airhart (professor emerita\, Emmanuel College)\, Dr. Keith Carlson (Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Indigenous and Community-Engaged History and director of the Peace and Reconciliation Centre\, University of the Fraser Valley) and Kang-hee Han (sessional lecturer of Christian history\, Hanshin University) for a conversation about his book. \nAbout the Book\nA Canadian-built mission house in the heart of Seoul became the heart of the emerging South Korean democratization movement\, while a Korean minister rose to serve as the spiritual leader of Canada’s largest Protestant denomination. The century-long Korean-Canadian church relationship has had a lasting influence on Korean society and on the culture and mission of The United Church of Canada\, helping to crack the colonial foundations of Canadian Protestantism. \nWater from Dragon’s Well explores the connection between the Korean Christian community and the Canadian church and its missionaries from the 1890s to the present.

SUMMARY:Rethinking Preaching Conference 2022: Intercultural Preaching
DESCRIPTION:The Centre for Religion and Its Contexts at Emmanuel College and Shining Waters Regional Council are pleased to host the second “Rethinking Preaching’ Conference with this year’s theme\, “Intercultural Preaching.” The challenge of intercultural preaching in the midst of social crises defined by racism\, colonialism\, and ecological crisis has gripped preachers in all parts of the world. What’s more\, online worship and the use of technology are on the rise and have contributed to cultural shifts that challenge long-held assumptions about worship. All prompts us to rethink preaching. The Centre and Shining Waters invite seasoned and new preachers\, students of homiletics\, and participants who seek to “rethink preaching” to join our conference in 2022. \nOur keynote speakers\, Prof. Jerusha Neal (Duke Divinity School) and the Rev. Michael Blair (General Secretary of the United Church of Canada) will be joining us. These special guests along with two responders\, four workshop leaders\, and racialized preachers who engage in intercultural preaching research will help us rethink and explore intercultural preaching for today.

SUMMARY:Anthropology for Ministry
DESCRIPTION:From the “Things They Didn’t Teach Me in Seminary” Seminar Series at Emmanuel College\nFriday\, March 11\, 10 a.m.–12 p.m. EST\, Online\nWorkshop Leader: Susan Willhauck and Ken Chitwood \nMinisters are increasingly drawing on the world of anthropology to help them quickly discern what’s happening on the ground in their new ministry contexts. In this two-hour workshop\, we’ll hear from two leading experts in this field and work in small groups with them to do some training around how to use these tools in our own ministry. We will start in a large group to hear presentations from both presenters\, and then break into smaller groups to engage with their particular areas of expertise. \nSusan Willhauck is recently retired Associate Professor of Pastoral Theology at Atlantic School of Theology and co-author of Qualitative Research in Theological Education: Pedagogy in Practice. Participants in Susan’s breakout group will develop and rehearse a repertoire of ethnographic tools that will foster the kind of community theological collaboration that inspires prophetic leadership in the midst of social challenges (e.g.\, pandemic woes\, economic instability\, political contentiousness\, racial and ethnic injustice). \nKen Chitwood is the Fritz Thyssen Foundation Postdoctoral Researcher at the Berlin Graduate School Muslim Cultures and Societies\, Freie Universität Berlin and author of The Muslims of Latin America and the Caribbean. Participants in Ken’s breakout group will focus on how to expand their vision for how to use ethnographic practices in Christian ministry to include comparative theological efforts and interreligious encounters in a world ever more defined by the invitations and challenges of diversity and difference. \nFees: $15; Free for TST students\nDetails and Registration: https://uoft.me/cricevents/#ac-1247

SUMMARY:"A History of Contemporary Praise & Worship" Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the launch of “A History of Contemporary Praise & Worship: Understanding the Ideas That Reshaped the Protestant Church” (2021 Baker Academic) by Lester Ruth (research professor of Christian worship\, Duke University) and Lim Swee Hong (Deer Park Associate Professor of Sacred Music\, Emmanuel College). \nNew forms of worship have transformed the face of the American church over the past fifty years. Drawing on a wide range of primary sources\, including interviews with dozens of important stakeholders and key players\, this volume by two worship experts offers the first comprehensive history of Contemporary Praise & Worship. The authors provide insight into where this phenomenon began and how it reshaped the Protestant church. They also emphasize the span of denominational\, regional\, and ethnic expressions of contemporary worship\, taking into account the liturgical dynamics involved it its emergence and the dynamics that led to its growth. The authors show that Contemporary Praise & Worship came about through theological reflection on the Bible\, not merely as the result of cultural impulses. Events in Canada are critical to the history\, especially in the origins. \nThis book will be of interest to professors and students of worship\, worship pastors\, leaders of contemporary worship services\, liturgical scholars\, and church and cultural historians. SUMMARY:Working Genius Workshop

SUMMARY:Exploring Satisfaction & Stress in Ministry: Personalized Insights to Cultivate Well-Being (Pathways for Wellness)
DESCRIPTION:Initial Workshop Date: Wednesday\, January 12\, 2022\, 7–9:30 p.m. EST\, Online \nFollow-Up Sessions: January 26\, February 23\, March 30\, April 27 (last Wednesday of each month\, 7–8:30 p.m. EST/EDT\, Online) \nThis course is for anyone working in a Christian vocational context who wants to explore how to protect the aspects of their ministry lives that nourish them and navigate the inevitable stressors along the way. It may be especially helpful to folks considering a job transition\, experiencing an unsustainable level of stress or fatigue\, or just getting started in ministry life. \nIn the initial workshop\, Beth Anne Fisher will give an overview of the Malcolm Inventory for Satisfaction and Stress in Ministry (MISSiM)\, a statistically valid and reliable questionnaire she helped developed alongside Dr. Wanda Malcolm at Wycliffe College. Participants will learn how they can use their own personal data from completing the MISSiM to reflect\, celebrate and assess their current ministry experiences. \nFollowing the introductory workshop\, Fisher will facilitate four monthly peer-group sessions of deeper MISSiM insight exploration and round-table conversation about satisfaction and stress in three areas of ministry life: Structural/Systemic\, Interpersonal/Relational\, and Internal/Personal. This pilot group at Emmanuel College will be limited to 12 participants. \nThis course requires one hour of advance prep time to complete the MISSiM prior to January 5\, 2022\, so that all participants can receive their personalized report before the first session. Cost is $200\, but if booked by December 18\, you can get an early-bird price of $150.  Upon registering and paying your registration fee\, a code and link to the questionnaire will be emailed to you.
