SUMMARY:Fundraising Music Concert for Emmanuel College Sang Chul Lee Scholarship
DESCRIPTION:Korean Traditional Songs (pansori\, gayageum)\, Trumpet\, Youth Quartet Chamber\, Jazz and Piano by Emmanuel College professors\, and classic baritone song. \nThis music concert is going to be special because we are celebrating the 100th birth year of the late Very Right Rev. Dr. Sang Cheol Lee. This concert is also part of the United Church’s Centennial year celebration. We have good reasons to gather and mark these anniversaries with the fundraising effort. \nOver the course of almost 100 years\, scholarships have been awarded to Korean students at Emmanuel College with the generous support from the United Church of Canada. The first Korean scholarship recipient was awarded to Rev. Jaerin Moon in 1928\, the same year that Emmanuel College opened its doors for the first time. Since admission of Rev. Moon in 1928\, there have been many Korean graduates who have made admirable contributions to theology\, ministry\, social activism around democratization\, peace\, gender justice\, and unification issues in Korea\, within the United Church of Canada\, and around the world. Since its inception\, Korean descent students continue to be among the biggest ethnic minority group at Emmanuel and Toronto School of Theology. Yet\, there is no assigned scholarship for Korean students as of yet. As a way of remembering our history\, strengthening this long relationship and carrying a beautiful legacy\, we would like to host this fundraising event for establishing Korean scholarship at Emmanuel College. Your support and generosity will be deeply appreciated. \nTime: Saturday\, October 26\, 2024\, 3:30pm – 5 pm\nPlace: Willowdale Emmanuel United Church (349 Kenneth Ave. Toronto\, Ontario\, M2N 4V9)\nTicket: $100 (a tax receipt will be issued after expenses being deducted)\nTo issue a tax receipt\, please send your full name\, mailing address\, email\, phone number).\nInquiry: HyeRan Kim-Cragg ; Hae-Bin Jung \, 905 – 781 -1678

SUMMARY:Preparing for Death in the Midst of Life and in the Time of MAiD: A Workshop with Anne Simmonds
DESCRIPTION:Registration Fee (includes snack and lunch)\n$150 + HST (Regular)\n$120 + HST (Early Bird\, register by September 30\, 2023) \nDetails at uoft.me/cricevents/#ac-1810 \nAbout the Workshop \n(FOR CLERGY\, CHAPLAINS\, SPIRITUAL CARE PROVIDERS)\nSpiritual Care to the dying and bereaved\, while being one of the most satisfying aspects of ministry\, has always had challenges. We embrace those struggling with difficult decisions. The advent of MAiD has increased the complexity of these conversations and deliberations. In this workshop we will address the new laws in Canada around who is eligible for this service\, the novel issues MAiD presents\, and the “opposing tensions experienced by individuals who accompany a loved one through MAiD”. A. Frolic PhD. \nWhat might it mean to more intentionally prepare for death\, in our own lives and with those we serve? How can we facilitate and witness difficult\, but necessary\, conversations around death and dying before it is too late? The workshop will provide ample time for participants to learn\, reflect\, and share\, as well as time for easily learned self-care practices. \nBy encountering death many thousands of times\, I have come to a view that there is usually little to fear and much to prepare for. Most patients and families believe the opposite. Kathryn Mannix\, MD \nDetails at uoft.me/cricevents/#ac-1810 \nAbout Anne Simmonds \nAs adjunct faculty at Emmanuel College\, Rev. Dr. Anne Simmonds Emm 9T6 has taught courses in death\, dying and grieving\, and prayer in Emmanuel’s MDiv\, MPS\, continuing education and parish nursing programs. Simmonds is a voluntary associate minister at Rosedale United Church and spiritual mentor in Toronto. She is a gifted speaker and facilitator who draws on her extensive experience in teaching\, congregational ministry\, hospital chaplaincy\, nursing and her own grief. Simmonds was awarded the Emmanuel College Alumni/ae Association (ECAA) Distinguished Alumni/ae Award in 2018. \nDetails at uoft.me/cricevents/#ac-1810

SUMMARY:The School of Earth & Soul–celtic Wisdom 3: Sacred Imagination
DESCRIPTION:In Celtic wisdom the sacred is as present on earth as it is in heaven\, as immanent as it is transcendent\, as human as it is divine\, as physical as it is spiritual.\n–John Philip Newell\, Sacred Earth Sacred Soul \nIn 2016\, John Philip Newell began a teaching initiative that is called The School of Earth & Soul. Its purpose is to reawaken awareness of the sacred in all things through the recovery of Celtic wisdom for today and to help translate this awareness into compassionate action. The school follows a three-year cycle of teaching in its annual retreats. Participants may join at any stage in the three-year cycle and attend any of the Earth & Soul venues across the country. \nIn July\, Emmanuel College’s Centre for Religion and Its Contexts is hosting the “Celtic Wisdom 3: Sacred Imagination” retreat\, where participants will be invited to reawaken to the sacredness of the human imagination and compassionate action through the teachings of Alexander John Scott\, George MacLeod and Kenneth White. \nThis commuter retreat includes both teaching and spiritual practice over three days. Each day begins and ends with meditative prayer and chant. John Philip teaches from the wisdom of Celtic prophets over the centuries\, applying this ancient wisdom to today’s most critical challenges. Cami Twilling invites us into spiritual practice bringing our inner attention to the presence of the sacred within us and within all things. In the early afternoon\, there is silence and free time for resting and walking. Our meals are shared in common and on the evening of the second day we have a party to celebrate our time together at the school. On the final morning before lunch\, we share together in a closing ritual of thanksgiving. Visit the following url for full schedule and details: uoft.me/CelticWisdom3

DESCRIPTION:Join us for the launch of David Kim-Cragg’s book\, Water from Dragon’s Well: The History of a Korean-Canadian Church Relationship (2022\, McGill-Queen’s University Press)\, on Monday\, October 3 at 7 p.m. EDT. The launch is online and free. Kim-Cragg Emm 9T9 is both a sessional lecturer at Emmanuel College and minister at St. Matthew’s United Church in Richmond Hill. \nKim-Cragg will be joined by Phyllis D. The century-long Korean-Canadian church relationship has had a lasting influence on Korean society and on the culture and mission of The United Church of Canada\, helping to crack the colonial foundations of Canadian Protestantism. \nWater from Dragon’s Well explores the connection between the Korean Christian community and the Canadian church and its missionaries from the 1890s to the present.

SUMMARY:Rethinking Preaching Conference 2022: Intercultural Preaching
DESCRIPTION:The Centre for Religion and Its Contexts at Emmanuel College and Shining Waters Regional Council are pleased to host the second “Rethinking Preaching’ Conference with this year’s theme\, “Intercultural Preaching.” The challenge of intercultural preaching in the midst of social crises defined by racism\, colonialism\, and ecological crisis has gripped preachers in all parts of the world. What’s more\, online worship and the use of technology are on the rise and have contributed to cultural shifts that challenge long-held assumptions about worship. All prompts us to rethink preaching. The Centre and Shining Waters invite seasoned and new preachers\, students of homiletics\, and participants who seek to “rethink preaching” to join our conference in 2022. \nOur keynote speakers\, Prof. Jerusha Neal (Duke Divinity School) and the Rev. Michael Blair (General Secretary of the United Church of Canada) will be joining us. These special guests along with two responders\, four workshop leaders\, and racialized preachers who engage in intercultural preaching research will help us rethink and explore intercultural preaching for today.

SUMMARY:Anthropology for Ministry
DESCRIPTION:From the “Things They Didn’t Teach Me in Seminary” Seminar Series at Emmanuel College\nFriday\, March 11\, 10 a.m.–12 p.m. EST\, Online\nWorkshop Leader: Susan Willhauck and Ken Chitwood \nMinisters are increasingly drawing on the world of anthropology to help them quickly discern what’s happening on the ground in their new ministry contexts. In this two-hour workshop\, we’ll hear from two leading experts in this field and work in small groups with them to do some training around how to use these tools in our own ministry. We will start in a large group to hear presentations from both presenters\, and then break into smaller groups to engage with their particular areas of expertise. \nSusan Willhauck is recently retired Associate Professor of Pastoral Theology at Atlantic School of Theology and co-author of Qualitative Research in Theological Education: Pedagogy in Practice. Participants in Susan’s breakout group will develop and rehearse a repertoire of ethnographic tools that will foster the kind of community theological collaboration that inspires prophetic leadership in the midst of social challenges (e.g.\, pandemic woes\, economic instability\, political contentiousness\, racial and ethnic injustice). \nKen Chitwood is the Fritz Thyssen Foundation Postdoctoral Researcher at the Berlin Graduate School Muslim Cultures and Societies\, Freie Universität Berlin and author of The Muslims of Latin America and the Caribbean. Participants in Ken’s breakout group will focus on how to expand their vision for how to use ethnographic practices in Christian ministry to include comparative theological efforts and interreligious encounters in a world ever more defined by the invitations and challenges of diversity and difference. \nFees: $15; Free for TST students\nDetails and Registration: https://uoft.me/cricevents/#ac-1247

SUMMARY:"A History of Contemporary Praise & Worship" Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the launch of “A History of Contemporary Praise & Worship: Understanding the Ideas That Reshaped the Protestant Church” (2021 Baker Academic) by Lester Ruth (research professor of Christian worship\, Duke University) and Lim Swee Hong (Deer Park Associate Professor of Sacred Music\, Emmanuel College). \nNew forms of worship have transformed the face of the American church over the past fifty years. Drawing on a wide range of primary sources\, including interviews with dozens of important stakeholders and key players\, this volume by two worship experts offers the first comprehensive history of Contemporary Praise & Worship. The authors provide insight into where this phenomenon began and how it reshaped the Protestant church. They also emphasize the span of denominational\, regional\, and ethnic expressions of contemporary worship\, taking into account the liturgical dynamics involved it its emergence and the dynamics that led to its growth. The authors show that Contemporary Praise & Worship came about through theological reflection on the Bible\, not merely as the result of cultural impulses. Events in Canada are critical to the history\, especially in the origins. \nThis book will be of interest to professors and students of worship\, worship pastors\, leaders of contemporary worship services\, liturgical scholars\, and church and cultural historians.
