SUMMARY:Music for the Soul with Gillian Stone
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an intimate and stripped-down performance from Gillian Stone\, whose music draws from post-rock\, folk\, ambience\, and minimalism. \nBorn and raised on the traditional territory of the Quw’utsun on Vancouver Island\, with a profound connection to her Icelandic heritage\, Stone channels the influence of outer landscapes in her inner lyrical worlds and soundscapes. Her music processes riding the waves of mental health\, particularly as it relates to dysregulation\, addiction\, shame\, relational trauma\, and dissociation. Because of this\, she speaks candidly about her lived experience through her music and expressions of artistic identity as an act of destigmatization. \n– \nOur beautiful main hall serves as the perfect backdrop for this concert – donations are welcomed\, and proceeds support the Beach United Church food programs.

SUMMARY:The Beatles and Their World: A Six-Part Lecture Series with Dr. Mike Daley
DESCRIPTION:Beach United Church presents Dr. Mike Daley\, musicologist and storyteller\, with a fascinating lecture series exploring the iconic Beatles. \nThis course will track the musical development of the Beatles\, starting from the earliest days in Liverpool\, moving through the excitement of Beatlemania\, the rush of psychedelia\, and the maturity of their studio years. While the focus will be on the music\, we will also consider how recording techniques\, the music business\, the music of other artists\, and the larger culture of the 1960s affected John\, Paul\, George\, and Ringo as they created their classic works. Bonus\, if a live lecture is missed\, a pre-recorded version is available. \nLecture Outline \n1. MONDAY OCT.17 10AM – 12 The Quarry Men\nWe’ll examine the early lives of the members of the Beatles against the larger backdrop of postwar Liverpool. Their formative cultural influences\, from Elvis and Lonnie Donegan to the Goon Show\, will also be covered. From the formation of John Lennon’s teenage band The Quarry Men through early club dates in Liverpool\, we’ll look at the roots of the Beatles. \n2. MONDAY OCT.31 10AM – 12 The Early Beatles\nThe embryonic Beatles honed their craft at tough Liverpool suburban dances\, in Hamburg\, Germany\, and at the Cavern Club. When Brian Epstein signed on as their manager in early 1962\, the wheels were set in motion for their signing with EMI Records and their first hit singles. \n3. MONDAY NOV. 7 10 AM – 12 Beatlemania through 1964\nThe Beatles conquered England in 1963 and the rest of much of the world in 1964. In this class we’ll track the halcyon days of Beatlemania\, including their first appearance on the Ed Sullivan show and first film\, A Hard Day’s Night. \n4. MONDAY NOV.14 10AM-12 Transitional years – 1965-66\nIn 1965-66 the Beatles rewrote the rules of rock and roll music\, particularly in the recording studio. We’ll discuss their rapid artistic evolution in this period\, leading up to the end of their touring days and the release of their world-beating album Revolver. \n5. MONDAY NOV.21 10AM-12 Peak of creativity – 1967-68\nWith their innovative 1967 recordings including “Strawberry Fields Forever\,” the Beatles sealed their position at the top of pop music. The sudden death of their manager\, Brian Epstein\, in August 1967 threw the band into organizational turmoil. 1968 saw them creating a sprawling double album and starting their own company\, Apple. \n6. MONDAY NOV.28 10 AM-12 The Breakup – 1969-70\nThe ill-fated Get Back film project was an attempt to return to form\, but inter-band relations were in decline\, aided by drug abuse and simmering personal resentments. The final breakup was acrimonious and played out over years in the courts. Meanwhile the individual Beatles began their solo careers. We’ll discuss these later years and the Beatles’ legacy today.

SUMMARY:Music for the Soul: Sarah Beatty
DESCRIPTION:Quirky and captivating\, songwriter and scientist Sarah Beatty sounds a bit like Dusty Springfield coming off a science bender. With a voice as sharp as a silver-spur and dangerous as a diamond-backed sidewinder (Raw Ramp)\, she’s a curious observer and constant inquirer of life’s offerings. Her latest album\, Bandit Queen\, peaked at #1 on Canada’s Roots charts\, became a staple in Top 30 charts across the country\, appeared in the Earshot Top 20\, and keeps on being recognized by bloggers and industry insiders as one of those albums that people need to hear. Far beyond the mainstream\, it has landed on international playlists all the way from Nashville to The Netherlands and as a live performer\, she’s known for enchanting audiences with warmth\, wit\, and messages that make people think.

\n5. SUMMARY:Beaches East York Interfaith Candidates Meeting
DESCRIPTION:As the campaign for the June 2 Provincial Election begins\, 10 faith groups in Beaches East York have come together to host a Candidates Meeting. The event will take place at The Church of the Resurrection at 1100 Woodbine Avenue. People can attend in person or on Zoom on Thursday May 12 at 7:00 p.m. by registering at www.therez.ca/election \nThe meeting will give people of faith and all citizens a chance to hear the ideas of the various candidates and political parties on how they would create strong and vibrant communities following the pandemic. \nAs people of faith we believe that we have a responsibility:\n• to create a more just and equitable world\,\n• to care for one another … and for successive generations\, and\n• to protect the environment that we share. \nThese responsibilities inspire us to shape how we live in our community\, how we value people who are vulnerable and how we tend to creation. \nOur purpose is to hear how the different candidates would work to meet these responsibilities\, if they are elected to represent us in the Provincial Legislature. There will be opportunities for participant to submit questions for the candidates at the meeting. \nOur objective is not to instruct anyone on how to vote. We will leave it to the candidates to persuade each person. \nThis is the 4th Interfaith Candidates Meeting in Beaches East York in the past few years. Similar events have taken place during the last Provincial election and the past 2 Federal elections. The Beaches East York riding is between Coxwell Avenue and Victoria Park and extends from the lake all the way north to Sunrise Avenue. \nRepresentatives of several Christian\, Muslim and Jewish communities in the riding have endorsed the Candidates Meeting. Faith Groups involved directly in organizing the Candidates Meeting include: \nDanforth Mennonite Church; Church of the Resurrection; St. Aidan’s Anglican Church;\nKingston Road United Church; Calvary Baptist Church; Beach United Church; Kimbourne Park United Church; Beaches Presbyterian Church; Toronto United Mennonite Congregation; and Danforth Islamic Centre. Several other faith communities support the initiative but have not been available to help with the planning. \nTo register to attend the event in person at the Church of the Resurrection or on Zoom\, go to www.therez.ca/election \nPeople attending the event in person will be required to wear a mask; social distancing will be achieved by limiting attendance.

SUMMARY:Confronting Polarization: How to Cool It!
DESCRIPTION:Holding differences Creatively in the Public Forum with Facilitators Mardi Tindal\, former moderator of The United Church of Canada and Michael Saver\, consultant. Both are facilitators with The Centre for Courage and Renewal. This is a free online Zoom event being hosted by Beach United Church.\nAs we approach the June provincial election\, the toxic legacy of the U.S. insurrection\, the misinformation disseminated by the so-called ‘Freedom Convoy’\, and continued anxiety about the COVID – 19 pandemic\, have all had an impact on citizens of Ontario. Parliamentary democracy depends on robust discussion of differing ideas\, values and perspectives on societal issues in ways that affirm connections\, respect differences\, and de-escalate patterns of harm.\nWe will explore how to create and hold a safe and brave space for such discussion\, a space characterized by courage\, trust\, integrity and respect. Practices that enhance our ability to listen deeply\, to respond more than react\, and to hold the tension of differences will be offered. In addition to input from the presenters\, there will be a generous time for moderated questions and discussion.\nFor more information contact Moderator of this event for Beach United Church\, Mary Anne Alton : maryanne.alton@sympatico.ca   or 416-469-5877
