SUMMARY:Jazz and Reflection with Paul Novotny and Friends
DESCRIPTION:Join celebrated jazz bassist Paul Novotny\, guitarist David Occhipinti and pianist Amanda Tosoff for an afternoon of jazz originals and favourites at Beach United Church on Saturday\, February 3rd at 4:30pm. \nTickets are pay-what-you-can\, and proceeds support our year-round community programs\nhttps://www.zeffy.com/en-CA/ticketing/60e642c7-78db-4aee-bbf5-289246abd9d6 \n– \nAt age five\, Paul Novotny found the piano-sound to be mesmerizing\, then with piano lessons he began his journey into music. During high school Paul played bass\, drums\, piano and trombone and attended two Stan Kenton jazz workshops. He graduated with a major in graphic arts and is in the hall of honour at Thomas A. Stewart Secondary School. This was the first sign of his interdisciplinary approach to the arts. At seventeen Paul began formal music study at Humber College in Toronto and at nineteen he was invited to play bass in the Brian Browne trio. Browne was the 1974 Canadian songwriting award winner — Paul began performing with him five nights a week while learning repertoire from the great American songbook. \nPaul has now performed with jazz luminaries Cedar Walton\, Geoff Keezer\, Kenny Wheeler\, Scott Hamilton\, Jo-Anne Brackeen\, Lynn Arrial\, Richard Wyands\, Moncef Genoud\, Junior Mance\, and Don Thompson. He has accompanied singers Roger Whitaker\, Molly Johnson\, Tabe Johnson\, Jackie Richardson\, Susannah McCorkle\, Trudy Desmond\, Alana Bridgewater\, Michael Dunston\, Carol Welsman\, Barbra Lica\, and David Clayton Thomas. SUMMARY:Jazz & Reflection feat. Ben Bishop and Jonathan Meyer
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our kick-off concert on Sept. 30 featuring an incredible duo\, Ben Bishop and Jonathan Meyer on jazz guitar and bass. \nJazz Guitarist Ben Bishop favours a freewheeling\, bop-based guitar style\, most reminiscent of the classic guitarists of the 1950s and 1960s. Players including Kenny Burrell\, Wes Montgomery\, and Grant Green are major inspirations to his sound and musical approach. He currently resides in Toronto\, Canada\, where he regularly performs with many of the city’s finest jazz musicians. After a number of years living in New York\, during which he earned a DMA in Jazz Studies from the prestigious Eastman School of Music\, he is also active as an educator at Toronto’s Humber College. \n– \nJonathan Meyer\, born and raised in Toronto\, has performed professionally for over fifteen years with internationally renowned and award-winning artists such as Peter Appleyard\, Allison Au\, Tony “Oulabula” Bazley (Wes Montgomery\, Leroy Vinnegar)\, Ned Goold (Harry Connick Jr.)\, Pat Labarbera\, Michael Kaeshammer\, Bill Murray\, Mary Margaret O’Hara\, Norman Marshall Villeneuve\, and David Virelles to name just a few. He has played on numerous film and television soundtracks including the Chet Baker biopic “Born to be Blue” and has toured extensively throughout North America and Europe. He has recorded over twenty albums with artists encompassing a diverse range of styles\, including jazz\, rock\, pop\, folk\, avant-garde electronic\, and everything in between. \n– \nBeach United’s warm\, inviting hall serves as the perfect backdrop for this concert – donations are welcomed\, and proceeds support the Beach United Church food programs.

DESCRIPTION:Beach United is excited to present Brooklyn Doran at our Main Hall on Saturday\, September 16th at 4:30pm. \n– \nBrooklyn Doran (she/her) is a queer singer-songwriter originally from the heart of Northwestern Ontario\, who has been a staple of the Toronto folk scene for over ten years. Doran’s unique sound weaves song and storytelling; the polarity between her music and personality create a harmonious blend of wit and humour contrasted by vulnerable lyricism and haunting melody. \nMoving to Toronto in 2008\, Brooklyn Doran wasted no time building a reputation for herself in the music scene. A natural performer\, audiences were immediately drawn to Doran’s engaging storytelling and emotional honesty. An accomplished saxophonist\, she performed as a session player\, while booking gigs across the city as a solo artist; singing and strumming an old beat-up acoustic guitar that was purchased at a yard sale. \nHer newest record FIXER UPPER is available June 1\, 2023. \n– \nBeach United’s warm\, inviting hall serves as the perfect backdrop for this concert – donations are welcomed\, and proceeds support the Beach United Church food programs.
