SUMMARY:Thriving in Uncertain Times
DESCRIPTION:Life can be challenging and uncertain! Living in a COVID-19 world has added to that uncertainty and complicates our ability to cope with life’s most common challenges. Join facilitator Mary Thomson MSW\, RSW\, RP (Registered Social Worker & Psychotherapist) in this 2-part series\, as she helps us to deal with the continued uncertainty of these times. \nThis is an opportunity to name the uncomfortable emotions that are surfacing\, discuss the strategies that we are currently using\, and learn ways to cope more effectively. Mary will explore how to work with our thoughts and values to create flexibility\, resilience\, and hope. We will learn some principles and tools from Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) so that we can move gradually from merely surviving to thriving. \nSession One: Tuesday\, March 1\, 7:00-9:00pm \nHow Are We Doing? Dealing with Uncertainty\, Loss and Change in a Not-Quite-Post-Covid-19-World: In this session we will reflect on the uncertainty we are experiencing; name and seek to understand our emotions and what may be contributing to our stress; reflect on the ways in which we are coping and on how we can do so even more effectively. \nSession Two: Wednesday\, March 9\, 7:00-9:00pm \nWhere Are We Going? Building Resilience and Finding Hope on the Way to a Still Uncertain Future: In this session we will reflect on such things as resilience and radical acceptance. We will learn how to struggle less with things that we can’t control\, how to be mindful and present with our experiences\, how to develop self-compassion and the ability to remain calm in the storm\, and how to exercise kindness and gratitude.

SUMMARY:Anthropology for Ministry
DESCRIPTION:From the “Things They Didn’t Teach Me in Seminary” Seminar Series at Emmanuel College\nFriday\, March 11\, 10 a.m.–12 p.m. EST\, Online\nWorkshop Leader: Susan Willhauck and Ken Chitwood \nMinisters are increasingly drawing on the world of anthropology to help them quickly discern what’s happening on the ground in their new ministry contexts. In this two-hour workshop\, we’ll hear from two leading experts in this field and work in small groups with them to do some training around how to use these tools in our own ministry. We will start in a large group to hear presentations from both presenters\, and then break into smaller groups to engage with their particular areas of expertise. \nSusan Willhauck is recently retired Associate Professor of Pastoral Theology at Atlantic School of Theology and co-author of Qualitative Research in Theological Education: Pedagogy in Practice. Participants in Susan’s breakout group will develop and rehearse a repertoire of ethnographic tools that will foster the kind of community theological collaboration that inspires prophetic leadership in the midst of social challenges (e.g.\, pandemic woes\, economic instability\, political contentiousness\, racial and ethnic injustice). \nKen Chitwood is the Fritz Thyssen Foundation Postdoctoral Researcher at the Berlin Graduate School Muslim Cultures and Societies\, Freie Universität Berlin and author of The Muslims of Latin America and the Caribbean. Participants in Ken’s breakout group will focus on how to expand their vision for how to use ethnographic practices in Christian ministry to include comparative theological efforts and interreligious encounters in a world ever more defined by the invitations and challenges of diversity and difference. \nFees: $15; Free for TST students\nDetails and Registration: https://uoft.me/cricevents/#ac-1247
