DESCRIPTION:On an early morning at the end of August 1954 as people bustled along Bloor Street at Huron Avenue\, they saw smoke pouring out from the familiar presence of Bloor Street United Church. \nWithin 15 months\, Bloor Street re-opened with a new building that better suited the new day for faithful community in downtown Toronto. \nOn September 22nd\, 2024 we will mark 70 years of resilience and courageous spirit and presence\, as Bloor Street United again rebuilds and renews! \nWe’re doing this with a Jazz Service\, because Jazz is the soundtrack of the resilience of human dignity and worth. It’s the collaborative and renewing music of justice and hope. It’s improvisation and melody\, rhythm and beat. Jazz is alive! \nJoin us as Bloor Street United rises up once again\, with music\, and spirit\, for The Jazz Service\, Sunday\, September 22nd at 2:00 p.m. at St. Matthew’s United Church\, 729 St. Clair Avenue West. It will be led by Revs. Douglas duCharme (from Bloor Street United Church) and Brian Fraser (Brentwood Presbyterian Church and lead provocateur of Jazzthink Consulting). DESCRIPTION:On September 22nd\, Islington United Church and Indigenous People of Etobicoke will come together as an act of Reconciliation to bless the commissioned Indigenous mural\, Etobicoke — Place of the Alders: Honouring the Original Story. \nThe mural has been created by renowned Indigenous artist\, Philip Cote\, from Moose Deer Point First Nation. Philip is an Ancestral Knowledge Keeper\, Young Spiritual Elder\, Historian\, Activist\, and Educator. \nThe day will begin with the lighting of a Sacred Fire and Smudging\, followed by a Worship Service and Mural Blessing in the church Sanctuary. The event will culminate with Indigenous dancing\, singing\, drumming followed by an Indigenous lunch. DESCRIPTION:Want to spend some time at the cottage this summer and miss Sunday morning services? \nJoin us every Wednesday evening for our delightful Summer Potluck Dinner Series\, where the heart of our gatherings is sharing in singing hymns\, engaging with scripture and reflections\, and\, most importantly\, enjoying a meal in community. Each evening is a time of joyful fellowship\, delicious food\, and spiritual enrichment\, celebrating the blessings of unity and abundance. These weekly dinners offer a wonderful opportunity to connect with one another\, deepen our faith\, and experience the warmth of God’s love through music\, reflection\, and the simple act of sharing a meal. DESCRIPTION:Rimbala is an evidence-based falls prevention program that uses music as the principle means of intervention. Based on the work of visionary Swiss composer Émile Jaques-Dalcroze\, Rimbala enjoys one of the highest falls prevention results in the world\, with a 54% reduction in falls for community-dwelling seniors. \nOlder adults improve their gait (walking style)\, mobility\, cognitive skills and social intelligence in a relaxed but joyous setting. The improvised music brings fresh neuroplastic experiences that improves the connection between the body and brain in ways that conventional exercise cannot.
