SUMMARY:Fairlawn Avenue United Church Senior's Ministry Discussion Series
DESCRIPTION:Join resident author\, Gord Pitts and learn from his book showing how the past can inform our current reality \nScary Harry\, the Cheesemaker Assassin \nIt was a fractious time of vast inequity and sharply polarized views\, sparking an explosion of political violence in the U.S. But It was 1906\, not 2026. Into this cauldron of class warfare stepped Harry Orchard — paid assassin and a former cheesemaker from the Ontario countryside east of Toronto. What are the lessons from his murderous rampage in an earlier Gilded Age? Gord Pitts discusses his new book. Tuesday\, May 5 2:00pm – 3:30pm \nThese gatherings will be inclusive\, engaging\, and filled with opportunities to connect face-to-face. Each session will explore interesting\, accessible\, and enjoyable topics inspired by shared experiences\, curiosity\, and community. \nWhether you’ve attended previously or are joining us for the first time\, you’ll be warmly welcomed. Come on your own or bring a friend\, neighbour\, or family member—together we’ll enjoy good conversation\, shared stories\, and memorable moments. \nNo registration is required—just come as you are.

SUMMARY:West End Affirm Film Festival – Screening of Small Town Pride
DESCRIPTION:Come out wherever you are.\nSmall Town Pride offers an intimate look at the joys and challenges of being queer in a small town. Filmed in Alberta\, Nova Scotia and the Northwest Territories\, the film follows LGBTQ2S+ people and allies as they prepare for their local Pride celebrations. Organizing in church basements\, classrooms and around kitchen tables\, they take on a conservative town council that won’t fly a rainbow flag and bend some rules to create a safe space for youth to come out. But despite experiences of isolation and discrimination\, they love their communities and strive to make them places where everyone\, no matter who and how they love\, can live and thrive. \nDoors open at 6:30pm\, film starts at 7pm.
