SUMMARY:Alpha - In Person - Evening
DESCRIPTION:Looking for a safe space to discuss life’s big questions? You’re at the right spot! Alpha is a series of interactive sessions exploring the basics of the Christian faith\, meaning and life. \nEach session looks at a different question\, and is designed to create conversation. There’s no pressure\, no follow-up and no charge; it’s just an open\, informal\, and honest space to explore and discuss life’s big questions together. \nOffered IN-PERSON weekly for 11 weeks\, this course starts on Wednesday September 27\, 2023 from 6:30 pm – 9:00 pm at NBUC \nA light dinner will be served followed by the video and small group discussions. \nVideo.\nThe videos are designed to be engaging and inspire conversation. Usually around 30 minutes long\, they explore the big issues around faith and unpack the basics of Christianity\, addressing questions like “Who is Jesus?”\, “Why and how do I pray?” and “How does God guide us?” \nSmall Group Discussion.\nProbably the most important part of any Alpha: the chance to share thoughts and ideas about the talk without being corrected or judged. SUMMARY:Exploring Sacred Bonds ~ Fairlawn Fall Study with Rev. Jean Ward
DESCRIPTION:Join us in-person or on Zoom to explore the sacred bonds of belonging\, relationship and reciprocity through two books: \nBraiding Sweetgrass – Indigenous Wisdom\, Scientific Knowledge and the Teachings of Plants by Robin Wall Kimmerer\, 2013 \n“Action on behalf of life transforms. Because the relationship between self and the world is reciprocal\, it is not a question of first getting enlightened or saved and then acting. As we work to heal the earth\, the earth heals us.” \n“The land knows you\, even when you are lost.” \n“Knowing that you love the earth changes you\, activates you to defend and protect and celebrate. But when you feel that the earth loves you in return\, that feeling transforms the relationship from a one-way street into a sacred bond.” \nThe Woman Who Went To The Moon – Poems of Igloolik by Rosemary Clewes\, 2017 \n“… these poems will speak to those for whom body\, soul\, and naming are not divisible.”

SUMMARY:Discussion Group - Electric Vehicles
DESCRIPTION:The Men’s Discussion Group of Humber Valley United Church invites all to join us on Monday\, Oct. 30\, when we welcome a speaker followed by a lively discussion about Electric Vehicles. \nHave you considered purchasing an electric car? If so\, are you trying to save money and/or the planet? While in operation\, they emit zero CO2 emissions\, but do they provide an overall positive net emission result? What are the “pros and cons”? Are they more prone to “catch fire” in a collision? \nOur friend\, Mike Yelavich (owner of Altech Security Systems)\, whose mind-opening presentation on Security we enjoyed in 2022\, will discuss what we have now learned after 20 years of development. So please join us in-person at Humber Valley United Church\, 76 Anglesey Blvd.\, Etobicoke\, in the Hearth Room.

SUMMARY:Alpha - On-Line - Evening
DESCRIPTION:Alpha is a series of interactive sessions exploring the basics of the Christian faith. \nEach session looks at a different question\, and is designed to create conversation. There’s no pressure\, no follow-up and no charge; it’s just an open\, informal\, and honest space to explore and discuss life’s big questions together. \nOffered ONLINE weekly for 11 weeks\, on Wednesday evenings from 7:00pm – 8:30pm starting on September 27\, 2023 \nVideo.\nThe videos are designed to be engaging and inspire conversation. There’s no obligation to say anything; it’s an opportunity to hear from others and contribute your own perspective. \nCheck out the first session to see if this is something you would like to explore! \nAll are welcome!

SUMMARY:Rimbala Classes for Seniors
DESCRIPTION:Rimbala is an evidence-based falls prevention program that uses music as the principle means of intervention. Based on the work of visionary Swiss composer Émile Jaques-Dalcroze\, Rimbala enjoys one of the highest falls prevention results in the world\, with a 54% reduction in falls for community-dwelling seniors. \nOlder adults improve their gait (walking style)\, mobility\, cognitive skills and social intelligence in a relaxed but joyous setting. The improvised music brings fresh neuroplastic experiences that improves the connection between the body and brain in ways that conventional exercise cannot. Because music is broadly distributed in the brain\, there is a hypothesis that gentle exercise with cognitive components can prevent participants from the ravages of dementia — including Alzheimer’s. \nFor more information\, please visit: www.rimbala.com \nClasses are held at: \nRosedale United Church 159 Roxborough Dr\, Toronto Wednesdays 11:30 AM-12:30 PM $20.00 per session \nand online at various times throughout the week. \nPlease contact Dr. Daniel Rubinoff: 416.709.8381 doctor.rimbala@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Preparing for Death in the Midst of Life and in the Time of MAiD: A Workshop with Anne Simmonds
DESCRIPTION:Registration Fee (includes snack and lunch)\n$150 + HST (Regular)\n$120 + HST (Early Bird\, register by September 30\, 2023) \nDetails at uoft.me/cricevents/#ac-1810 \nAbout the Workshop \n(FOR CLERGY\, CHAPLAINS\, SPIRITUAL CARE PROVIDERS)\nSpiritual Care to the dying and bereaved\, while being one of the most satisfying aspects of ministry\, has always had challenges. We embrace those struggling with difficult decisions. The advent of MAiD has increased the complexity of these conversations and deliberations. In this workshop we will address the new laws in Canada around who is eligible for this service\, the novel issues MAiD presents\, and the “opposing tensions experienced by individuals who accompany a loved one through MAiD”. A. Frolic PhD. \nWhat might it mean to more intentionally prepare for death\, in our own lives and with those we serve? How can we facilitate and witness difficult\, but necessary\, conversations around death and dying before it is too late? The workshop will provide ample time for participants to learn\, reflect\, and share\, as well as time for easily learned self-care practices. \nBy encountering death many thousands of times\, I have come to a view that there is usually little to fear and much to prepare for. Most patients and families believe the opposite. Kathryn Mannix\, MD \nDetails at uoft.me/cricevents/#ac-1810 \nAbout Anne Simmonds \nAs adjunct faculty at Emmanuel College\, Rev. Dr. Anne Simmonds Emm 9T6 has taught courses in death\, dying and grieving\, and prayer in Emmanuel’s MDiv\, MPS\, continuing education and parish nursing programs. Simmonds is a voluntary associate minister at Rosedale United Church and spiritual mentor in Toronto. She is a gifted speaker and facilitator who draws on her extensive experience in teaching\, congregational ministry\, hospital chaplaincy\, nursing and her own grief. Simmonds was awarded the Emmanuel College Alumni/ae Association (ECAA) Distinguished Alumni/ae Award in 2018. \nDetails at uoft.me/cricevents/#ac-1810
