SUMMARY:Rethinking Preaching Conference 2024: Crossing Boundaries Toward Healing
DESCRIPTION:The Centre for Religion and Its Contexts at Emmanuel College and Shining Waters Regional Council (The United Church of Canada) are pleased to host the third “Rethinking Preaching’ Conference. In a world that is polarized and deeply divided\, the work of crossing boundaries for the sake of healing is crucial. This year’s Rethinking Preaching Conference (RPC) invites participants to consider the challenges and opportunities posed by issues such as religious difference\, mental health\, queer identity\, race\, ethnicity\, culture\, ability\, accessibility\, online technology\, and multi-language contexts and their intersectional natures. The sessions will help us explore what it means to be a preacher for today. The Centre and Shining Waters invite seasoned and new preachers\, students of homiletics and participants who seek to “rethink preaching” to join our conference in 2024. \nKeynote speaker: Rev. Dr. Debra Mumford \nInvited preacher: Rev. Dr. Cheri DiNovo \nWorkshop Leaders: Rev. Kimiko Karpoff\, Rev. Dr. Namjoong Kim\, Rev. Dr. Jake Myers and Rev. Evan Swance-Smith

SUMMARY:Rimbala Classes for Seniors
DESCRIPTION:Rimbala is an evidence-based falls prevention program that uses music as the principle means of intervention. Based on the work of visionary Swiss composer Émile Jaques-Dalcroze\, Rimbala enjoys one of the highest falls prevention results in the world\, with a 54% reduction in falls for community-dwelling seniors. \nOlder adults improve their gait (walking style)\, mobility\, cognitive skills and social intelligence in a relaxed but joyous setting. The improvised music brings fresh neuroplastic experiences that improves the connection between the body and brain in ways that conventional exercise cannot. Because music is broadly distributed in the brain\, there is a hypothesis that gentle exercise with cognitive components can prevent participants from the ravages of dementia — including Alzheimer’s. \nFor more information\, please visit: www.rimbala.com \nClasses are held at: \nRosedale United Church 159 Roxborough Dr\, Toronto Wednesdays 11:30 AM-12:30 PM $20.00 per session \nand online at various times throughout the week. \nPlease contact Dr. Daniel Rubinoff: 416.709.8381 doctor.rimbala@gmail.com

SUMMARY:The Blanket Exercise
DESCRIPTION:The blanket exercise is an interactive educational program that teaches the history of colonization in Canada. Led by KAIROS Canada the program was created in response to the 1996 report of the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples. It has been used as a teaching tool across Canada thousands of times. \nThe Blanket Exercise is based on using Indigenous methodologies. The goal is to build a shared understanding about our shared history as Indigenous and non-indigenous peoples in Canada by walking through the periods of pre-contact\, treaty-making\, colonization and resistance. \nParticipants are actively involved as they step on blankets that represent the land\, and step into the role of First Nations\, Inuit\, and Metis peoples. \nBy allowing participants to engage on emotional and intellectual levels\, the blanket exercise serves to both educate and increases empathy. \nThis is an adults-only event happening at Islington United Church on April 27th from 9:30am – 12:30pm\, and advance registration is required. As space is limited\, please register early to avoid disappointment. \nRegister: https://islingtonunited.org/event/the-blanket-exercise/

SUMMARY:Mapping the Ground We Stand On
DESCRIPTION:“Mapping The Ground We Stand On” invites participants to explore Indigenous presence on the map of Turtle Island\, the history of settler arrival\, and how each fit into the ongoing narratives. In addition\, the concepts of the Doctrine of Discovery\, terra nullius\, Indigenous Knowledge and Ways of Knowing will also be explored. \nThis learning process would not be possible without the presence of Indigenous Knowledge Holder\, Rev. Lee Claus\, for which we are very grateful. Lee is a retired minister in the United Church of Canada and a Mohawk First Nations person from the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory. \nThe process includes the use of PowerPoint animation\, videos\, small group discussion and a very large map! The hope is that through active listening\, understanding and reflection each participant will begin to formulate their next steps to meaningful action towards reconciliation. Everyone will be encouraged to think about how their personal and collective journeys’ will foster just\, respectful and healing relationships for all peoples – Indigenous and settler. \nThis workshop was first developed by The Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund (PWRDF)\, Anglican Church of Canada\, in 2015\, as part of its commitment to support the findings of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. \nCheryl Marek (Anglican Diocese of Toronto) will facilitate the process at Richmond Hill United Church. Cheryl has been involved with Pimatisiwin Nipi (Bih-ma’-dih-zih-win Ni-bi)\, which means Living Waters\, and the Toronto Pikangikum Work Group since 2013. In June 2019\, she trained to facilitate the PWRDF interactive workshop: Mapping the Ground We Stand On. \nACCESSIBILITY: this event is accessible via stairs.
