SUMMARY:Medical Assistance in Dying Information Session
DESCRIPTION:Following up from the excellent podcasts that Rev. Roberta Howey has produced on the subject of medical assistance in dying (MAID)\, Rev. Dr. Bacon will be joining Rev. Howey in a ministry forum on the above date. We will be joined by our guest the Reverend Doctor Anne Simmons who brings a wealth of experience in the area of death\, dying and the management of grief. Our plan is to have three brief presentations followed by a Q & A session. \nIn 2016 the Canadian Parliament passed legislation as Bill C-14: An Act to amend the Criminal Code and to make elated amendments to other Acts (Medical assistance in dying). This legislation now guides how such medical assistance can be provided when eligibility criteria and conditions are met. It has increasing implications for spiritual care practitioners and a learning curve that necessarily gives rise to personal discernment as well as associated caution. Although death and dying isn’t a subject with which all are comfortable we believe that\, from a pastoral care perspective\, this legislation could impact our lives as individuals as well as the lives of loved ones. \nIn the event that you wish to submit questions before the event please send them to me at eric@lawrenceparkchurch.ca. \nMAiD Information Session on November 16th. Click here to access the Zoom Link\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/81855833976 \nMeeting ID 818 5583 3976 \nIf you are having trouble with the link on your computer\, call 647 374 4685 meeting ID 81855833976#

SUMMARY:Psalms and Christianity With Rev. Stephen Milton
DESCRIPTION:Another series for The Bible for Busy People online on Zoom. \nWhy have the psalms been so important to Christians? We use them in our church services and funerals\, and they form the basis of many of our hymns. Much of their importance comes from the fact that they are used so often in the New Testament. Many of the most famous statements that Jesus makes are actually Jesus quoting from the psalms. Even Satan quotes them in the NT. Why? That’s what we’ll be looking at in this edition of the Bible for Busy People. Please note: the same material will be covered on each date. \nTuesday\, November 8 at 7:30 p.m.\nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/81882005698 \nMeeting ID: 818 8200 5698 \nFriday\, November 18 at 10 a.m.\nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/82008700406 \nMeeting ID: 820 0870 0406

SUMMARY:Music for the Soul: Sarah Beatty
DESCRIPTION:Quirky and captivating\, songwriter and scientist Sarah Beatty sounds a bit like Dusty Springfield coming off a science bender. With a voice as sharp as a silver-spur and dangerous as a diamond-backed sidewinder (Raw Ramp)\, she’s a curious observer and constant inquirer of life’s offerings. Her latest album\, Bandit Queen\, peaked at #1 on Canada’s Roots charts\, became a staple in Top 30 charts across the country\, appeared in the Earshot Top 20\, and keeps on being recognized by bloggers and industry insiders as one of those albums that people need to hear. Far beyond the mainstream\, it has landed on international playlists all the way from Nashville to The Netherlands and as a live performer\, she’s known for enchanting audiences with warmth\, wit\, and messages that make people think.

SUMMARY:The Beatles and Their World: A Six-Part Lecture Series with Dr. Mike Daley
DESCRIPTION:Beach United Church presents Dr. Mike Daley\, musicologist and storyteller\, with a fascinating lecture series exploring the iconic Beatles. \nThis course will track the musical development of the Beatles\, starting from the earliest days in Liverpool\, moving through the excitement of Beatlemania\, the rush of psychedelia\, and the maturity of their studio years. While the focus will be on the music\, we will also consider how recording techniques\, the music business\, the music of other artists\, and the larger culture of the 1960s affected John\, Paul\, George\, and Ringo as they created their classic works. Bonus\, if a live lecture is missed\, a pre-recorded version is available. \nLecture Outline \n1. MONDAY OCT.17 10AM – 12 The Quarry Men\nWe’ll examine the early lives of the members of the Beatles against the larger backdrop of postwar Liverpool. Their formative cultural influences\, from Elvis and Lonnie Donegan to the Goon Show\, will also be covered. From the formation of John Lennon’s teenage band The Quarry Men through early club dates in Liverpool\, we’ll look at the roots of the Beatles. \n2. MONDAY OCT.31 10AM – 12 The Early Beatles\nThe embryonic Beatles honed their craft at tough Liverpool suburban dances\, in Hamburg\, Germany\, and at the Cavern Club. When Brian Epstein signed on as their manager in early 1962\, the wheels were set in motion for their signing with EMI Records and their first hit singles. \n3. MONDAY NOV. 7 10 AM – 12 Beatlemania through 1964\nThe Beatles conquered England in 1963 and the rest of much of the world in 1964. In this class we’ll track the halcyon days of Beatlemania\, including their first appearance on the Ed Sullivan show and first film\, A Hard Day’s Night. \n4. MONDAY NOV.14 10AM-12 Transitional years – 1965-66\nIn 1965-66 the Beatles rewrote the rules of rock and roll music\, particularly in the recording studio. We’ll discuss their rapid artistic evolution in this period\, leading up to the end of their touring days and the release of their world-beating album Revolver. \n5. MONDAY NOV.21 10AM-12 Peak of creativity – 1967-68\nWith their innovative 1967 recordings including “Strawberry Fields Forever\,” the Beatles sealed their position at the top of pop music. The sudden death of their manager\, Brian Epstein\, in August 1967 threw the band into organizational turmoil. 1968 saw them creating a sprawling double album and starting their own company\, Apple. \n6. MONDAY NOV.28 10 AM-12 The Breakup – 1969-70\nThe ill-fated Get Back film project was an attempt to return to form\, but inter-band relations were in decline\, aided by drug abuse and simmering personal resentments. The final breakup was acrimonious and played out over years in the courts. Meanwhile the individual Beatles began their solo careers. We’ll discuss these later years and the Beatles’ legacy today.

SUMMARY:Worship Walk at Barrie Arboretum
DESCRIPTION:Hi all! \nOur next Worship Walk will occur this Wednesday\, December 7\, 7-8 pm\, at the Barrie Arboretum. This is also the evening of the monthly full moon. The moon will reach its fullness at 11:08 pm\, but we will be back home by then. This one is also known as the “Cold Moon”. So\, as always\, dress for the weather. And bring a flashlight. We will share some Bible readings for Advent and pause during our walk to reflect upon some of the life themes suggested both by the moon and scripture. \nDirections for Arboretum: The Arboretum is found in the North-West corner of Sunnidale Park. As you are driving North-West on Sunnidale\, towards the intersection with Cundles\, the Arboretum will be on your right. And\, as you approach the intersection\, you will see a cleared space on the shoulder for parking. I will be waiting for you here. Dress warm and bring a friend. \nbrucesweet4@gmail.com 705-209-3899
