SUMMARY:Beyond Word and Gesture
DESCRIPTION:The discovery of children’s graves on the grounds of a Residential school in Kamloops last summer\, motivated many settler Canadians to learn more about Canada’s relationship with Indigenous nations. Since then\, we have worked to learn the Truth about the anguish our government’s actions have created and the many promises made and broken.\nLearning the Truth leads us to question how we might Reconcile.\nIn 2021\, a group of leaders – Indigenous and Settler – acting on their commitment to create a more respectful and just relationship\, came together to answer that question. They created the Citizens Group for the 1% Indigenous Peoples Fund and have created a proposal that would serve to help Settlers and Indigenous people move into a more just and equitable relationship in a very concrete way – a way beyond words and gestures.\nRoyal York Road United Church will honour the second National Day of Truth and Reconciliation with a workshop on their proposal.\nPlease join us for an online session with one of the members of the Citizens Group\, Harry Oussoren. Harry will present us with their very intriguing solution and lead us in discussion. \nTime: Sep 28\, 2022 07:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada) \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/84954550936?pwd=Q0ZTRmZPUVVRVHU4eUVSYy9neVI0dz09 \nMeeting ID: 849 5455 0936\nPasscode: 549045 \nDial by your location\n+1 647 374 4685 Canada\n+1 647 558 0588 Canada

SUMMARY:Topic: Empathy\, Equity and Diversity—from a lens of Hate and Discrimination
DESCRIPTION:This session will use the message of P.E.A.C.E. (People Everywhere Actually Coexisting Equally) as a springboard for conversation. The reality is that not everyone wants P.E.A.C.E. nor sees the need for us to interact and communicate in harmony. So many ancestors and leaders have tried to champion this ever important topic only to be greeted with hatred\, anger and discrimination. During this session participants will be challenged to:\n• Acknowledge their own biases\n• Be open to uncomfortable conversations\n• Share their feelings and experiences honestly\n• Set goals for breaking negative patterns in their lives\n• Express their emotions in a creative format\n• Become more empathetic \nMatthew Jones\nMatthew Jones also known as “Testament” is a connoisseur of anything and everything involving words. From poetry\, spoken word and emceeing to facilitating\, hosting and keynoting\, Testament has been using his natural speaking abilities to inspire audiences for over 15 years. Testament has performed and taught coast to coast nationally and internationally. He has recorded three albums to date and shared stages with Naughty by Nature\, Biz Markie\, Kardinal Official and more. He has made numerous radio and television appearances including Much Music and MTV. A father\, an artist\, entrepreneur and revolutionary\, Testament uses his passion for words\, art and life to motivate\, inspire and lead. He trusts in the values of peace\, love and unity as his guiding principles as he continues to spread his message all across the world.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for the launch of David Kim-Cragg’s book\, Water from Dragon’s Well: The History of a Korean-Canadian Church Relationship (2022\, McGill-Queen’s University Press)\, on Monday\, October 3 at 7 p.m. EDT. The launch is online and free. The century-long Korean-Canadian church relationship has had a lasting influence on Korean society and on the culture and mission of The United Church of Canada\, helping to crack the colonial foundations of Canadian Protestantism. \nWater from Dragon’s Well explores the connection between the Korean Christian community and the Canadian church and its missionaries from the 1890s to the present.

SUMMARY:Free Webinar: Lessons and Legacies of the Holocaust
DESCRIPTION:Lessons & Legacies of the Holocaust Thursday\, October 13 at 2 p.m.\nBy Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies \n“The Holocaust is not just a Jewish story\, but a human story.” Explore the history of the Holocaust and the attitudes and social forces that enabled one of the darkest periods of human history to occur. \nPresenter: Elena Kingsbury \nElena Kingsbury has been an educator with FSWC for the past 4.5 years and has taught thousands of students across Ontario – in classrooms and auditoriums\, at our Centre\, and on the award-winning Tour for Humanity mobile classroom. Elena loves to teach individuals of all backgrounds and abilities and has helped develop many workshops and FSWC events including Freedom Day\, Speaker’s Idol\, and our National Policy Conference on Holocaust Education. In January 2020\, Elena relocated to our nation’s capital and has opened a new access point to FSWC programming in Ottawa and the surrounding communities of Eastern Ontario. Her love of history and curiosity about the wider world began at a very early age. As a child\, the majority of Jewish people she knew were survivors like her maternal grandparents who escaped Prague for Denmark in 1939. This personal connection started Elena on an academic path that would lead her to Montreal and McGill University where she completed her M.A. in History in 2014.

SUMMARY:CAFE CONVO - Transgender! Got Questions?
DESCRIPTION:Two transgender women from the Sudbury area\, Rita O’Link and Darlyn Hansen\, have been invited to speak about life experiences and challenges they faced as they transitioned to and commenced living as women in their communities. Both did so when they were older adults. They have experience presenting and engaging in Q and A sessions pertaining to non-binary and transgender lived experiences. \nThis Café Convo (coffee and conversation) event is open to everyone. SUMMARY:The Beatles and Their World: A Six-Part Lecture Series with Dr. Mike Daley
DESCRIPTION:Beach United Church presents Dr. Mike Daley\, musicologist and storyteller\, with a fascinating lecture series exploring the iconic Beatles. \nThis course will track the musical development of the Beatles\, starting from the earliest days in Liverpool\, moving through the excitement of Beatlemania\, the rush of psychedelia\, and the maturity of their studio years. While the focus will be on the music\, we will also consider how recording techniques\, the music business\, the music of other artists\, and the larger culture of the 1960s affected John\, Paul\, George\, and Ringo as they created their classic works. Bonus\, if a live lecture is missed\, a pre-recorded version is available. \nLecture Outline \n1. MONDAY OCT.17 10AM – 12 The Quarry Men\nWe’ll examine the early lives of the members of the Beatles against the larger backdrop of postwar Liverpool. Their formative cultural influences\, from Elvis and Lonnie Donegan to the Goon Show\, will also be covered. From the formation of John Lennon’s teenage band The Quarry Men through early club dates in Liverpool\, we’ll look at the roots of the Beatles. \n2. MONDAY OCT.31 10AM – 12 The Early Beatles\nThe embryonic Beatles honed their craft at tough Liverpool suburban dances\, in Hamburg\, Germany\, and at the Cavern Club. When Brian Epstein signed on as their manager in early 1962\, the wheels were set in motion for their signing with EMI Records and their first hit singles. \n3. MONDAY NOV. 7 10 AM – 12 Beatlemania through 1964\nThe Beatles conquered England in 1963 and the rest of much of the world in 1964. In this class we’ll track the halcyon days of Beatlemania\, including their first appearance on the Ed Sullivan show and first film\, A Hard Day’s Night. \n4. MONDAY NOV.14 10AM-12 Transitional years – 1965-66\nIn 1965-66 the Beatles rewrote the rules of rock and roll music\, particularly in the recording studio. We’ll discuss their rapid artistic evolution in this period\, leading up to the end of their touring days and the release of their world-beating album Revolver. \n5. MONDAY NOV.21 10AM-12 Peak of creativity – 1967-68\nWith their innovative 1967 recordings including “Strawberry Fields Forever\,” the Beatles sealed their position at the top of pop music. The sudden death of their manager\, Brian Epstein\, in August 1967 threw the band into organizational turmoil. 1968 saw them creating a sprawling double album and starting their own company\, Apple. \n6. MONDAY NOV.28 10 AM-12 The Breakup – 1969-70\nThe ill-fated Get Back film project was an attempt to return to form\, but inter-band relations were in decline\, aided by drug abuse and simmering personal resentments. The final breakup was acrimonious and played out over years in the courts. Meanwhile the individual Beatles began their solo careers. We’ll discuss these later years and the Beatles’ legacy today.

This workshop will be an opportunity to process and reflect on aspects of change\, loss\, and grief. We will sharpen our skills in creating space to attend to loss–our own and that of others. We will discover how tending to grief is prayer\, and allows Spirit to nurture us. This workshop is designed for anyone who wants to increase their competence and comfort level in this area\, personally and/or professionally. Through focused conversations\, personal reflection\, story-telling\, and small group sharing\, participants will engage in a life-giving experience. \nAbout the Workshop Leader\nAs adjunct faculty at Emmanuel College\, Rev. Dr. Anne Simmonds Emm 9T6 has taught courses in “Death Dying and Grieving” and “Prayer” in Emmanuel’s MDiv\, MPS\, continuing education and parish nursing programs.
