SUMMARY:Are you going to BE?
DESCRIPTION:Do you like books?\nWould you like to meet some authors?\nWould you want to have tea with your neighbours? \nIf you answered ‘yes’ to any of these\, you will want to be part of the inaugural “Are you going to BE {Book Event”?” September 10th\, a community event at Richmond Hill United Church.\nProceeds from this event are for the diverse social programs Richmond Hill United supports in our community.\nA call for donations of books brought more than ten thousand books which have been gathered and sorted. Many people need to find good homes for their much beloved book!\nThere are many genres: popular fiction\, classics\, romance\, mystery\, spy\, sci-fi….biographies\, hobbies\, self help books\, cookbooks\, gardening\, environment\, nature\, science\, history\, business….\nDo you know any children? Several retired teachers have given many excellent books – picture books\, early readers\, bedtime stories… Many opportunities to spark the love of reading and learning.\nAward winning independent bookstore Blue Heron Books will be selling the published books by authors Tish Cohen\, Bianca Marais\, Rachel McMillan\, Lucy Black and John Ota. Come meet the authors as they speak and sign books. This is an excellent opportunity for you to pick up gifts for any occasion. (December is just around the corner)\nA “must see” is the presentation on handwriting analysis by Elaine Chantal and Peter Dennis. It is both educational and entertaining. You will not be disappointed. \nJohn Ota\, author of The Kitchen is the keynote speaker at 3:30. You will be entertained as you learn about the evolution of the kitchen and appliances as John takes you along on his journey as he visited kitchens in the U.S. and Canada in preparation to design his own kitchen. You will not want to miss this personal and entertaining presentation. Purchase one of his books and have John personalize it for you.\nThe Children’s corner is the place to visit to make your own bookmark and participate in Storytime.\nThe UCW are serving refreshments in the sunlit Garden Room. Relax with a refreshment\, visit\, stay and read or browse through the selection of cookbooks (proceeds will go directly to UCW initiatives).\nThe Community Room will be brimming with activity. The self-published authors Vince Conville\, Kim Fluxgold and Peter Dennis will be selling and signing their books.\nA special RHUC Outreach Project is selling Orange Shirt Day t-shirts to show our support for the National Truth and Reconciliation Day. These t-shirts were sourced from a local indigenous designer and will be available in sizes S\, M\, L & XL.\nCome meet Metis Beading Artist Kathy Morgan. She will be doing demonstrations and will be offering items for sale. Michelle Zikovitz will have a basketry demonstration in the morning. Other artists will be doing demos too!\nA sneak peak of Richmond Hill Artists Studio Art Walk happening September 24 will be on display and for purchase.\nWe’ve consulted the local Village of Richmond Hill Business Improvement Area and discovered 11 restaurants you can walk to from RHUC! Come early and choose your book purchases and then meet a friend for lunch\, between attending author readings\nThe books are priced very reasonably – a dollar for paperbacks and a twoonie for hard covers; there are quantity discounts. Some very special books will be part of a HAT – Hourly Auction Table. Groups of books will be offered each hour to the highest bidder.

SUMMARY:Beyond Word and Gesture
DESCRIPTION:The discovery of children’s graves on the grounds of a Residential school in Kamloops last summer\, motivated many settler Canadians to learn more about Canada’s relationship with Indigenous nations. Since then\, we have worked to learn the Truth about the anguish our government’s actions have created and the many promises made and broken.\nLearning the Truth leads us to question how we might Reconcile.\nIn 2021\, a group of leaders – Indigenous and Settler – acting on their commitment to create a more respectful and just relationship\, came together to answer that question. They created the Citizens Group for the 1% Indigenous Peoples Fund and have created a proposal that would serve to help Settlers and Indigenous people move into a more just and equitable relationship in a very concrete way – a way beyond words and gestures.\nRoyal York Road United Church will honour the second National Day of Truth and Reconciliation with a workshop on their proposal.\nPlease join us for an online session with one of the members of the Citizens Group\, Harry Oussoren. Harry will present us with their very intriguing solution and lead us in discussion. \nTime: Sep 28\, 2022 07:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada) \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/84954550936?pwd=Q0ZTRmZPUVVRVHU4eUVSYy9neVI0dz09 \nMeeting ID: 849 5455 0936\nPasscode: 549045 \nDial by your location\n+1 647 374 4685 Canada\n+1 647 558 0588 Canada

SUMMARY:Topic: Empathy\, Equity and Diversity—from a lens of Hate and Discrimination
DESCRIPTION:This session will use the message of P.E.A.C.E. (People Everywhere Actually Coexisting Equally) as a springboard for conversation. The reality is that not everyone wants P.E.A.C.E. nor sees the need for us to interact and communicate in harmony. So many ancestors and leaders have tried to champion this ever important topic only to be greeted with hatred\, anger and discrimination. During this session participants will be challenged to:\n• Acknowledge their own biases\n• Be open to uncomfortable conversations\n• Share their feelings and experiences honestly\n• Set goals for breaking negative patterns in their lives\n• Express their emotions in a creative format\n• Become more empathetic \nMatthew Jones\nMatthew Jones also known as “Testament” is a connoisseur of anything and everything involving words. From poetry\, spoken word and emceeing to facilitating\, hosting and keynoting\, Testament has been using his natural speaking abilities to inspire audiences for over 15 years. Testament has performed and taught coast to coast nationally and internationally. He has recorded three albums to date and shared stages with Naughty by Nature\, Biz Markie\, Kardinal Official and more. He has made numerous radio and television appearances including Much Music and MTV. A father\, an artist\, entrepreneur and revolutionary\, Testament uses his passion for words\, art and life to motivate\, inspire and lead. He trusts in the values of peace\, love and unity as his guiding principles as he continues to spread his message all across the world.

SUMMARY:Book Launch of David Kim-Cragg's "Water from Dragon’s Well: The History of a Korean-Canadian Church Relationship"
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the launch of David Kim-Cragg’s book\, Water from Dragon’s Well: The History of a Korean-Canadian Church Relationship (2022\, McGill-Queen’s University Press)\, on Monday\, October 3 at 7 p.m. EDT. The launch is online and free. Kim-Cragg Emm 9T9 is both a sessional lecturer at Emmanuel College and minister at St. Matthew’s United Church in Richmond Hill. \nKim-Cragg will be joined by Phyllis D. Airhart (professor emerita\, Emmanuel College)\, Dr. Keith Carlson (Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Indigenous and Community-Engaged History and director of the Peace and Reconciliation Centre\, University of the Fraser Valley) and Kang-hee Han (sessional lecturer of Christian history\, Hanshin University) for a conversation about his book. \nAbout the Book\nA Canadian-built mission house in the heart of Seoul became the heart of the emerging South Korean democratization movement\, while a Korean minister rose to serve as the spiritual leader of Canada’s largest Protestant denomination. The century-long Korean-Canadian church relationship has had a lasting influence on Korean society and on the culture and mission of The United Church of Canada\, helping to crack the colonial foundations of Canadian Protestantism. \nWater from Dragon’s Well explores the connection between the Korean Christian community and the Canadian church and its missionaries from the 1890s to the present.

SUMMARY:Free Webinar: Lessons and Legacies of the Holocaust
DESCRIPTION:Lessons & Legacies of the Holocaust Thursday\, October 13 at 2 p.m.\nBy Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies \n“The Holocaust is not just a Jewish story\, but a human story.” Explore the history of the Holocaust and the attitudes and social forces that enabled one of the darkest periods of human history to occur. \nPresenter: Elena Kingsbury \nElena Kingsbury has been an educator with FSWC for the past 4.5 years and has taught thousands of students across Ontario – in classrooms and auditoriums\, at our Centre\, and on the award-winning Tour for Humanity mobile classroom. Elena loves to teach individuals of all backgrounds and abilities and has helped develop many workshops and FSWC events including Freedom Day\, Speaker’s Idol\, and our National Policy Conference on Holocaust Education. In January 2020\, Elena relocated to our nation’s capital and has opened a new access point to FSWC programming in Ottawa and the surrounding communities of Eastern Ontario. Her love of history and curiosity about the wider world began at a very early age. As a child\, the majority of Jewish people she knew were survivors like her maternal grandparents who escaped Prague for Denmark in 1939. This personal connection started Elena on an academic path that would lead her to Montreal and McGill University where she completed her M.A. in History in 2014.
