SUMMARY:Jazz and Reflection with Paul Novotny and Friends
DESCRIPTION:Join celebrated jazz bassist Paul Novotny\, guitarist David Occhipinti and pianist Amanda Tosoff for an afternoon of jazz originals and favourites at Beach United Church on Saturday\, February 3rd at 4:30pm. \nTickets are pay-what-you-can\, and proceeds support our year-round community programs\nhttps://www.zeffy.com/en-CA/ticketing/60e642c7-78db-4aee-bbf5-289246abd9d6 \n– \nAt age five\, Paul Novotny found the piano-sound to be mesmerizing\, then with piano lessons he began his journey into music. During high school Paul played bass\, drums\, piano and trombone and attended two Stan Kenton jazz workshops. He graduated with a major in graphic arts and is in the hall of honour at Thomas A. Stewart Secondary School. This was the first sign of his interdisciplinary approach to the arts. At seventeen Paul began formal music study at Humber College in Toronto and at nineteen he was invited to play bass in the Brian Browne trio. Browne was the 1974 Canadian songwriting award winner — Paul began performing with him five nights a week while learning repertoire from the great American songbook. \nPaul has now performed with jazz luminaries Cedar Walton\, Geoff Keezer\, Kenny Wheeler\, Scott Hamilton\, Jo-Anne Brackeen\, Lynn Arrial\, Richard Wyands\, Moncef Genoud\, Junior Mance\, and Don Thompson. He has accompanied singers Roger Whitaker\, Molly Johnson\, Tabe Johnson\, Jackie Richardson\, Susannah McCorkle\, Trudy Desmond\, Alana Bridgewater\, Michael Dunston\, Carol Welsman\, Barbra Lica\, and David Clayton Thomas. As a studio bassist\, he played on the 2018 platinum selling video game soundtrack Cuphead .For more information on Paul\, please visit his website.

SUMMARY:Music for the Soul with Opera Revue
DESCRIPTION:Beach United Church is excited to present the hit opera show everyone is talking about: Opera Revue. Tickets are pay-what-you-can and proceeds go towards supporting our musicians and our year-round community programs. \nOpera Revue began with the question “Why does opera get such a bad rap?”. Founder and lead Soprano\, Danie Friesen\, came up with several answers: It’s expensive. You have to dress up. It’s snobby. You can’t drink\, except during intermission. You can’t talk. It’s snobby. You can’t get up and move around. And it’s snobby. \nSo\, that’s what Opera Revue has set out to change. Their shows are a great way to introduce opera to people who have never seen it before\, as well as a new way for opera lovers to enjoy it. \nSo come out to opera in a casual setting\, where you can feel comfortable to talk and share the experience with those around you\, without breaking the bank to afford a ticket! Opera Revue aims to take away the exclusive nature of opera\, and make it accessible for all audiences. \nOpera Revue was founded in 2017 by soprano Danie Friesen.

SUMMARY:Rimbala Classes for Seniors
DESCRIPTION:Rimbala is an evidence-based falls prevention program that uses music as the principle means of intervention. Based on the work of visionary Swiss composer Émile Jaques-Dalcroze\, Rimbala enjoys one of the highest falls prevention results in the world\, with a 54% reduction in falls for community-dwelling seniors. \nOlder adults improve their gait (walking style)\, mobility\, cognitive skills and social intelligence in a relaxed but joyous setting. The improvised music brings fresh neuroplastic experiences that improves the connection between the body and brain in ways that conventional exercise cannot. Because music is broadly distributed in the brain\, there is a hypothesis that gentle exercise with cognitive components can prevent participants from the ravages of dementia — including Alzheimer’s. \nFor more information\, please visit: www.rimbala.com \nClasses are held at: \nRosedale United Church 159 Roxborough Dr\, Toronto Wednesdays 11:30 AM-12:30 PM $20.00 per session \nand online at various times throughout the week. \nPlease contact Dr. Daniel Rubinoff: 416.709.8381 doctor.rimbala@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Lenten Book Study
DESCRIPTION:Everyone is invited to a 6-week Lenten book study. It will be held on Zoom weekly on Mondays from 4:15-5:45pm\, beginning on Monday\, February 19th. It will run until March 25. \nWe will be discussing The Last Week by Marcus J. Borg and John Dominic Crossan. Using Mark’s gospel as a guide\, they present a day-by-day account of Jesus’ final week of life. They intentionally play on the term «passion»\, opposing Jesus’ passion for the Justice of God\, a fair share for all\, against the familiar emphasis on his «suffering» (Passion Week). The book sets the events of the week into the political and cultural context of the time; this realism should inspire insight and lively discussion. \nDetails and Zoom link at https://bloorstreetunited.org/churchsocial-calendar/?event_id=59847&event_date=2024-02-19
