SUMMARY:Town Hall Info Session and Regional Meeting to Vote on Remit
DESCRIPTION:Town Hall Info Session\nJoin us on Tuesday\, September 19 starting at 6 p.m. for our town hall information session\, when we will gather on Zoom with our friends from Canadian Shield Regional Council to review and discuss the remit to remove structural barriers to developing and sustaining an autonomous Indigenous Church. Special guest the Rev. Michael Blair\, General Secretary\, will be with us to join in the discussion. \nThis information session is open to all those interested in learning more about the remit vote\, both for your own community of faith’s vote or our regional response. Please register below to attend. \n  \n \n \n \n \n \n Regional Meeting to Vote on Remit\nFollowing the information session\, Shining Waters regional members will stay online and vote on our regional response to the remit. We anticipate ending by 8 p.m. \nThis is a Category 3 Remit\, and so requires a vote by every regional council and each pastoral charge’s governing body. If a regional council or a pastoral charge does not register a vote\, that is considered a vote against the proposal. \nThere is one question to be voted on\, as follows: \nDoes the regional council agree to amend the Basis of Union to reflect: \n\nThat The United Church of Canada will be organized as follows (1) a three-council structure\, consisting of communities of faith\, regional councils and a Denominational Council*; and (2) an autonomous National Indigenous Organization; and\nThat once the new autonomous National Indigenous Organization is established within The United Church of Canada\, it will have its own mechanisms to make any future changes to its structure and processes\, and\, therefore will not be subject to the remit process under section 7.4.1 of the Basis of Union**; and\nThe changes required for the establishment of the autonomous National Indigenous Organization.\n\n  \nOnce the regional vote has been completed we will submit the regional response form to the General Council Office. \n  \nFor more information and to register please see our website here.

SUMMARY:Duty of Care Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Duty of Care Workshop\nTuesday\, April 25\, 2023\non ZOOM\n7:00 – 8:30 p.m. \nAs congregations are coming back to in-person worship and other activities\, it is a good time to review your duty of care program. The United Church of Canada is committed to providing a safe environment for worship\, work\, and study in all communities of faith. \nWe have a legal\, moral\, and spiritual duty to care for and protect participants in our church programs. This is a legal principle called duty of care\, and church groups have been\, and will be\, held legally responsible for ensuring reasonable measures are taken to ensure safety.\nOur church is blessed with the gifts of many who offer leadership as volunteers\, staff\, and ministry personnel. These people have a special calling to offer their time and talents in congregations through Sunday schools\, programs for children and youth\, choirs\, home visiting\, and many other ministries of the church. A duty of care program helps ensure that everyone\, including staff\, volunteers\, participants and the church as a whole\, are safe and protected. \nThis workshop will provide a general overview of duty of care and how communities of faith can review their programs and assess risks. This event is designed to engage congregational staff (lay and clergy) and key lay leaders\, including members of the church board/council\, M&P committee and all committees/working groups with responsibility for worship\, outreach\, and spiritual growth/Christian education in the fundamentals of creating safer worshipping communities. \nJoin Melody Duncanson-Hales\, Community of Faith Stewardship Support Minister\, Diane Matheson-Jimenez\, Community of Faith Support Minister\, and Jody Maltby\, Regional Staff Lead and Communities of Faith Minister for an evening of discussion and exploration. \nRegister Now

Please share this invitation with financial and property representatives and those interested in the environment. \nJoin us on Zoom: \nhttps://united-church.zoom.us/j/83203695467 \nMeeting ID: 832 0369 5467 \nThere is no cost and no need to register\, however we are happy to send you materials in advance if you let us know you would like to know more. SUMMARY:Confronting Polarization: How to Cool It!
DESCRIPTION:Holding differences Creatively in the Public Forum with Facilitators Mardi Tindal\, former moderator of The United Church of Canada and Michael Saver\, consultant. Both are facilitators with The Centre for Courage and Renewal. This is a free online Zoom event being hosted by Beach United Church.\nAs we approach the June provincial election\, the toxic legacy of the U.S. insurrection\, the misinformation disseminated by the so-called ‘Freedom Convoy’\, and continued anxiety about the COVID – 19 pandemic\, have all had an impact on citizens of Ontario. Parliamentary democracy depends on robust discussion of differing ideas\, values and perspectives on societal issues in ways that affirm connections\, respect differences\, and de-escalate patterns of harm.\nWe will explore how to create and hold a safe and brave space for such discussion\, a space characterized by courage\, trust\, integrity and respect. Practices that enhance our ability to listen deeply\, to respond more than react\, and to hold the tension of differences will be offered. In addition to input from the presenters\, there will be a generous time for moderated questions and discussion.\nFor more information contact Moderator of this event for Beach United Church\, Mary Anne Alton : maryanne.alton@sympatico.ca   or 416-469-5877

SUMMARY:Rethinking Preaching Conference 2022: Intercultural Preaching
DESCRIPTION:The Centre for Religion and Its Contexts at Emmanuel College and Shining Waters Regional Council are pleased to host the second “Rethinking Preaching’ Conference with this year’s theme\, “Intercultural Preaching.” The challenge of intercultural preaching in the midst of social crises defined by racism\, colonialism\, and ecological crisis has gripped preachers in all parts of the world. What’s more\, online worship and the use of technology are on the rise and have contributed to cultural shifts that challenge long-held assumptions about worship. All prompts us to rethink preaching. The Centre and Shining Waters invite seasoned and new preachers\, students of homiletics\, and participants who seek to “rethink preaching” to join our conference in 2022. \nOur keynote speakers\, Prof. Jerusha Neal (Duke Divinity School) and the Rev. Michael Blair (General Secretary of the United Church of Canada) will be joining us. These special guests along with two responders\, four workshop leaders\, and racialized preachers who engage in intercultural preaching research will help us rethink and explore intercultural preaching for today.
