DESCRIPTION:The Right Relations Circle of Islington United Church invites you to join Philip Cote III\, MFA\, Young Spiritual Elder\, Artist\, Activist and Educator\, in a Cultural Learning Circle on Sunday\, April 7\, 2024 from 12:15 to 2:00 pm in the Chapel. \nPhilip will share traditional teachings and offer a step-by-step understanding of the medicine wheel as a guide for living a full life through the four stages of life. \nThe session will start with a smudge. SUMMARY:The Blanket Exercise
DESCRIPTION:The blanket exercise is an interactive educational program that teaches the history of colonization in Canada. Led by KAIROS Canada the program was created in response to the 1996 report of the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples. It has been used as a teaching tool across Canada thousands of times. \nThe Blanket Exercise is based on using Indigenous methodologies. The goal is to build a shared understanding about our shared history as Indigenous and non-indigenous peoples in Canada by walking through the periods of pre-contact\, treaty-making\, colonization and resistance. \nParticipants are actively involved as they step on blankets that represent the land\, and step into the role of First Nations\, Inuit\, and Metis peoples. \nBy allowing participants to engage on emotional and intellectual levels\, the blanket exercise serves to both educate and increases empathy. \nThis is an adults-only event happening at Islington United Church on April 27th from 9:30am – 12:30pm\, and advance registration is required.
