SUMMARY:Annual Gathering of United Network for Justice and Peace in Palestine and Israel (UNJPPI)
DESCRIPTION:In line with our United Church call to ‘Bold Discipleship\, Deep Spirituality\, Radical Justice’\, the theme of this year’s UNJPPI Gathering is “Responding to a Cry for Hope”. That is the Call which was issued in 2019 by Kairos Palestine and Palestinian Christians. \nThe UNJPPI Gathering will be in London\, Ontario from May 6 to 8\, with a community event at King’s College on May 5. \nIn an attempt to work in the spirit of decolonization\, most of our leadership will be Palestinian as we try to decolonize our work and listen to Palestinians talk to us out of their experience. They include:\n• Yara Shufani – a Palestinian Canadian on “Unity Uprisings 2021 – A Year Later”\n• Shadia Qubti – whose home is Nazareth and who has been studying in Canada since 2020. “Peace-building beyond dipping humus”.\n• Amal Alhaddad – who lives in Victoria and has recently emigrated from Gaza.\n• Rev. Dr. Munther Isaac\, from Bethlehem\, in via technology speaking on “Jesus’ call to be peace-builders”\n• Dr. Gabor Mate will also address our gathering by zoom on “Would you rather be illusioned or see things as they really are”.\n• Mariam Barghouti – a journalist from Ramallah on “What is happening right now? How are voices of Palestinians being silenced”. \nWe will learn together from what our resource people have to say as well as from each other as we share our experiences\, insights and understanding.\nWe hope to be encouraged and re-vitalized in our support of human rights for Palestinians and justice and peace for Israelis and Palestinians. \nFor more information\, check the Gathering website at https://unjppi.ca or email George Bartlett at g.bartlett@sympatico.ca.

SUMMARY:Confronting Polarization: How to Cool It!
DESCRIPTION:Holding differences Creatively in the Public Forum with Facilitators Mardi Tindal\, former moderator of The United Church of Canada and Michael Saver\, consultant. Both are facilitators with The Centre for Courage and Renewal. This is a free online Zoom event being hosted by Beach United Church.\nAs we approach the June provincial election\, the toxic legacy of the U.S. insurrection\, the misinformation disseminated by the so-called ‘Freedom Convoy’\, and continued anxiety about the COVID – 19 pandemic\, have all had an impact on citizens of Ontario. Parliamentary democracy depends on robust discussion of differing ideas\, values and perspectives on societal issues in ways that affirm connections\, respect differences\, and de-escalate patterns of harm.\nWe will explore how to create and hold a safe and brave space for such discussion\, a space characterized by courage\, trust\, integrity and respect. Practices that enhance our ability to listen deeply\, to respond more than react\, and to hold the tension of differences will be offered. In addition to input from the presenters\, there will be a generous time for moderated questions and discussion.\nFor more information contact Moderator of this event for Beach United Church\, Mary Anne Alton : maryanne.alton@sympatico.ca   or 416-469-5877

SUMMARY:Rethinking Preaching Conference 2022: Intercultural Preaching
DESCRIPTION:The Centre for Religion and Its Contexts at Emmanuel College and Shining Waters Regional Council are pleased to host the second “Rethinking Preaching’ Conference with this year’s theme\, “Intercultural Preaching.” The challenge of intercultural preaching in the midst of social crises defined by racism\, colonialism\, and ecological crisis has gripped preachers in all parts of the world. What’s more\, online worship and the use of technology are on the rise and have contributed to cultural shifts that challenge long-held assumptions about worship. All prompts us to rethink preaching. The Centre and Shining Waters invite seasoned and new preachers\, students of homiletics\, and participants who seek to “rethink preaching” to join our conference in 2022. \nOur keynote speakers\, Prof. Jerusha Neal (Duke Divinity School) and the Rev. Michael Blair (General Secretary of the United Church of Canada) will be joining us. These special guests along with two responders\, four workshop leaders\, and racialized preachers who engage in intercultural preaching research will help us rethink and explore intercultural preaching for today.

SUMMARY:Free Online Workshop: Overcoming Othering\, Building Belonging
DESCRIPTION:Free Online Workshop: Overcoming Othering\, Building Belonging – Friday\, January 28\, 2022 at 4:00 p.m. \nGrace Place is glad to announce the next session\, the first in the New Year\, in its Safer Communities Project learning series. This workshop is being presented by Rivers of Hope—a unique organization that uses the expressive power of the arts to educate on racism\, prejudice\, and hate\, thereby building hate-free communities. See session details below. \nWorkshop Goals \na. Unpacking “Othering”:\nWe explore how groups of people are marked as “Other” and targeted for racism\, prejudice\, and hate. We dig deep into two examples of Othering—anti-Asian and anti-Muslim hate. \nb. Understanding the Bystander Effect:\nWe explore how the bystander effect can impact whether or not people offer help if they witness someone being targeted for racism\, prejudice\, or hate. \nc. How we can use Bystander Intervention:\nWe share the 5 Ds of bystander intervention and use theatre activities to practice bystander intervention\, while emphasizing safety\, choice\, and de-escalation. \nClick here to register: https://forms.gle/xATx7xNoXTTi9NRK6\nor visit www.graceplace.ca
