SUMMARY:Davenport Community Land Trust Charter Talks
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursdays over the next 10 weeks (January 16 – March 20\, 2025). The Charter Talks build upon earlier initiatives to have Davenport residents put together their own Davenport Community Land Trust (DCLT) Charter. \nThis Charter contains several articles dealing with how potential DCLT residents can support one another through resolving conflict\, providing appropriate services\, ensuring access to recreation activities\, and several other initiatives. These talks will take place over 10 weeks in 2025\, and each week will include discussions about how we can add to each preexisting Charter article and whether we should include new articles as well. These talks are taking place in the hopes of having a fully completed Charter at the end of 10 weeks. \nHelp Create a Davenport where:\n– No One is Under Threat of Displacement.\n– Where Members of the Community feel Safe\, are Joyful\, have Dignity\, and can be Housed; Where Members of the Community have Access to Spaces where they feel a Sense of Belonging.

SUMMARY:Conspiracy Theories and Religion: An Evening with Justin Ling
DESCRIPTION:Does ‘religion’ cultivate conspiratorial thinking? Are theology and conspiracism the same kind of ‘knowledge’? Or can theological thinking and faith communities offer critical resources to counter the conspiracism that increasingly threatens public life? \nJoin award-winning journalist Justin Ling to explore the relationship between ‘religion’ and ‘conspiracism’ at St. Andrew’s United Church (Yonge/Bloor) on 30 January. After his keynote presentation\, Justin will dialogue with the Rev’d Morgan Bell (a minister at St. Andrew’s and PhD candidate in theology at the University of Toronto) before fielding audience questions. \nIn lieu of admission\, freewill donations will benefit the Canadian Journalists for Free Expression. This event is offered online and in-person.

SUMMARY:STONE SOUP BARN RAISING
DESCRIPTION:Stone Soup Network Barn Raising — TICKETS ARE FREE:\nOn Monday\, June 20th\, 7-8 pm\, we’re hosting a night of story and song to celebrate the Stone Soup Network and raise funds to keep ‘building new barns’ of plenty in our communities. It’s hybrid\, so you choose in-person or Zoom. For COVID protocol reasons\, we’re asking guests to reserve in advance so we can be good hosts.  Join us in person at the beautiful Trinity St. Paul’s United Church\, or participate online via Zoom. \nReserve your ticket here on event ticketing site: https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/windermere-united-church/events/stone-soup-network-barn-raising/ \nFUNDS SUPPORT STONESOUPNETWORK.CA: \nAll funds raised go to support the Stone Soup Network. Incubated out of Windermere United Church\, in Toronto’s Bloor West\, Stone Soup Network forms strategic partnerships\, within neighbourhoods\, to build relationships of trust\, find local solutions to inequity and sustainability\, and provide those who experience exclusion (women\, economically disadvantaged\, homeless\, socially isolated elderly\, newcomers\, disadvantaged youth\, and others) the additional resources they need to belong. Since we began\, we’ve made over $250\,000 in goods and services available to neighbours in need and supported multiple neighbourhood campaigns that helped build more just\, equitable\, sustainable communities. Despite the pandemic challenges\, the project has provided more than 1000 in-demand products and services in the last year alone. Things like virtual music classes for kids in lockdown\, pharmacy gift cards for seniors and new moms\, and even 13 X week-long day camp spots at the High Park Nature Center in the summer. Our June 20th Barn Raising is to help us expand to new neighbourhoods in 2022 and 2023. \nIf you can’t make the event\, but want to make a donation\, please go to https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/windermere-united-church/campaign/stone-soup-network/ where all donations are tax receipted. \nOUR FUNDRAISING GOAL IS $14\,000:\nAll support will help us continue this simple\, yet powerful\, approach to sharing abundance in the 21st century.

SUMMARY:Racism in Canada by Sam Tecle
DESCRIPTION:In this free online session\, participants will learn about the history of racism writ large in Canada and specifically the history of anti-black racism. \n*How does racism work in the Canadian context and how does it specifically play out in our communities?\n*What does anti-black racism cost us as a community? \nThis session will be an active\, participatory\, and engaging presentation. (Recommended for ages 13+) \nAbout Sam Tecle \nSam Tecle’s research and scholarly work spans across the areas of Black and Diaspora Studies\, Urban Studies\, and Sociology of Education. His work focuses on the analysis of diverse experiences\, trajectories and expressions of Blackness\, grounded in particular histories of racialization\, colonialism\, community formation and resistance. His forthcoming work Black Grammars: On Difference and Belonging explores the experiences and perspectives relating to blackness and Black identification of East African Diasporas across the UK\, Canada and the US. More broadly\, Sam is interested in questions of Black Sociality\, Black cultural production and its expressions across the diaspora. \nHis research and teaching draws on his deep experience in community-engaged work\, focused largely on Blackness and educational settings in Toronto. This community-engaged work has been conducted in partnership with organizations to create new supports and opportunities for Black students at the secondary level and in the transition to post-secondary education\, in the face of a variety of systemic barriers they encounter. He has particularly prioritized work with Success Beyond Limits\, a program serving students in the Jane and Finch community.

SUMMARY:Beaches East York Interfaith Candidates Meeting
DESCRIPTION:As the campaign for the June 2 Provincial Election begins\, 10 faith groups in Beaches East York have come together to host a Candidates Meeting. The event will take place at The Church of the Resurrection at 1100 Woodbine Avenue. People can attend in person or on Zoom on Thursday May 12 at 7:00 p.m. by registering at www.therez.ca/election \nThe meeting will give people of faith and all citizens a chance to hear the ideas of the various candidates and political parties on how they would create strong and vibrant communities following the pandemic. \nAs people of faith we believe that we have a responsibility:\n• to create a more just and equitable world\,\n• to care for one another … and for successive generations\, and\n• to protect the environment that we share. \nThese responsibilities inspire us to shape how we live in our community\, how we value people who are vulnerable and how we tend to creation. \nOur purpose is to hear how the different candidates would work to meet these responsibilities\, if they are elected to represent us in the Provincial Legislature. There will be opportunities for participant to submit questions for the candidates at the meeting. \nOur objective is not to instruct anyone on how to vote. We will leave it to the candidates to persuade each person. \nThis is the 4th Interfaith Candidates Meeting in Beaches East York in the past few years. Similar events have taken place during the last Provincial election and the past 2 Federal elections. The Beaches East York riding is between Coxwell Avenue and Victoria Park and extends from the lake all the way north to Sunrise Avenue. \nRepresentatives of several Christian\, Muslim and Jewish communities in the riding have endorsed the Candidates Meeting.
