SUMMARY:Prayerful Listening
DESCRIPTION:As we prepare to enter the season of Lent\, Islington United Church warmly invites you to engage in a novel faith-building experience: Prayerful Listening. \nThis online experience is a newly-offered opportunity designed to help us connect with ourselves\, one another and God’s guidance through scripture. All are welcomed to participate. \nPlease register in advance on our website at https://islingtonunited.org/event/36314/

SUMMARY:Upcoming Free Session: Is Domestic Violence a Hate Crime? (April 12th at 2:00 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:Grace Place is glad to present the next session in its Safer Communities Project learning series. \nDescription\nHate crimes are based on a specific characteristic of a group or individual such as race\, gender\, or religion. The overwhelming majority of domestic violence victims are women. This session will explore the idea and characteristics of domestic violence as a hate crime and discuss the need to start viewing it as a hate crime. \nSpeaker: Dr. Laurie Samuel\nDr. Laurie “L.J.” Samuel is a Criminologist with expertise in police-community relations\, police misconduct\, risk management\, community engagement\, and interpersonal violence. With over ten years working with the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) in Washington\, DC she is a leading expert in Early Identification and Intervention System (EIS). She also served as the Director of the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) Division. She worked as an expert with the Department of Justice and was an invited speaker at the Amnesty International meetings in Amsterdam on policing. \nIn 2015 Dr. Samuel noticed an escalation in violence against women incidents based on police reports and news stories. In response\, she created Cupid’s Sting\, an interpersonal violence reduction program. The mission of Cupid’s Sting is to teach women life-saving skills through workshops on interpersonal violence\, domestic violence\, and street harassment\, including demonstration and practice of self-defense techniques. A former professor at Howard University\, she developed and facilitated workshops on dating abuse\, situational awareness\, and self-defense for her students. \nOn March 14\, 2018\, Dr. Samuel launched the Cupid’s Sting Non-Profit Organization partnering with the community to create a safer and healthier environment for families\, students\, employees\, and neighbours. Cupid’s Sting now operates in the US\, Canada\, and the Caribbean. \nDr. Samuel has been featured in The Brampton Guardian\, The Mississauga News\, The Great Canadian Woman Podcast\, University of Windsor’s Prevent\, Resist\, Support Podcast\, The Southwester\, The Hill Rag\, The Smithsonian Institution\, and on news programs Wake Up Washington and WUSA9. She is the 2021/2022 recipient of the Innovators and Entrepreneurs Foundation CANIE Award. \nDr. Samuel writes a blog called “You Have the Right to Remain Informed” that focuses on crime tips for women\, information on victimization\, and policing. She is also the author of the novel Dear Diary\, which features a murder mystery based on a domestic violence victim. A resident of Peel\, Dr. Samuel enjoys hanging out with her family and working out. \nhttps://www.graceplace.ca/post/is-domestic-violence-a-hate-crime-tuesday-april-12-2022-at-2-00-p-m \nFor further details: Contact our office at 905-451-1215 or email: safercommunities@graceplace.ca

SUMMARY:Time for Rest and Repair: A Retreat for People Whose Edges are Frayed
DESCRIPTION:Some find inspiration in the ancient teaching that “in crisis lies opportunity.” But living in the midst of multiple crises and ongoing turmoil often leads to exhaustion\, loss of meaning\, disengagement and even withdrawal. Our edges are frayed\, seemingly beyond repair. It can be difficult to remember our original sense of calling\, of who we are and why we do the work that we do. \nThis is an invitation to spend a weekend in the peaceful setting of the Crieff Hills Retreat Centre in Puslinch\, Ontario. As we emerge from winter and welcome the first signs of spring\, we will consider how to reconnect “soul and role\,” to borrow Parker Palmer’s phrasing. The weekend will be structured to give ample time for both rest and reflection\, in solitude and with others\, indoors as well as outside in the beautiful surroundings\, trusting that each participant will receive what they most need from our gathering together. \nPlease see our website for more details and to register by contacting Hannah Schell at channahschell@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Rethinking Preaching Conference 2022: Intercultural Preaching
DESCRIPTION:The Centre for Religion and Its Contexts at Emmanuel College and Shining Waters Regional Council are pleased to host the second “Rethinking Preaching’ Conference with this year’s theme\, “Intercultural Preaching.” The challenge of intercultural preaching in the midst of social crises defined by racism\, colonialism\, and ecological crisis has gripped preachers in all parts of the world. What’s more\, online worship and the use of technology are on the rise and have contributed to cultural shifts that challenge long-held assumptions about worship. All prompts us to rethink preaching. The Centre and Shining Waters invite seasoned and new preachers\, students of homiletics\, and participants who seek to “rethink preaching” to join our conference in 2022. \nOur keynote speakers\, Prof. Jerusha Neal (Duke Divinity School) and the Rev. Michael Blair (General Secretary of the United Church of Canada) will be joining us. These special guests along with two responders\, four workshop leaders\, and racialized preachers who engage in intercultural preaching research will help us rethink and explore intercultural preaching for today.
