SUMMARY:The Blanket Exercise
DESCRIPTION:The blanket exercise is an interactive educational program that teaches the history of colonization in Canada. Led by KAIROS Canada the program was created in response to the 1996 report of the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples. It has been used as a teaching tool across Canada thousands of times. \nThe Blanket Exercise is based on using Indigenous methodologies. The goal is to build a shared understanding about our shared history as Indigenous and non-indigenous peoples in Canada by walking through the periods of pre-contact\, treaty-making\, colonization and resistance. \nParticipants are actively involved as they step on blankets that represent the land\, and step into the role of First Nations\, Inuit\, and Metis peoples. \nBy allowing participants to engage on emotional and intellectual levels\, the blanket exercise serves to both educate and increases empathy. \nThis is an adults-only event happening at Islington United Church on April 27th from 9:30am – 12:30pm\, and advance registration is required. DESCRIPTION:The Beach United Church Choir is excited to present an evening of music\, refreshments and community fellowship to welcome in the spring season. \nThe Beach United Choir is a community choir that helps support the congregational music of Beach United Church. The choir is known for its annual Christmas Cantata\, a highlight in the community\, and for its dynamic and energetic performances at Sunday morning worship services. \nThis is a fundraiser for Beach United – tickets are $40/adult and $15/child. \nOur special musical guest for the evening will be Juno-nominated Barbra Lica\, joined by Tom Fleming on guitar and Mark Godfrey on bass.
