United Church of Canada Fundraising Proposal
On December 15, 2020 Mass Hysterical, A Comedic Cantata was released at a “live” online Gala. It was a smash success and now this brand-new collaboration between Second City, Toronto and members of the Toronto Symphony is available as a fundraiser. We’d like to expand the scope of the project to include every United Church in Canada. How would that work?
In a nutshell, if a member of your church buys the video ($20), then $10 goes to your church. The more people from your church that buy it, the more money your church will make. This is not unlike those chocolate fundraisers that we used to do in school, back in the day. The original three participating churches keep the other $10 from sales. Please share this notice with your congregation. Make sure that you leave the name of your church in the comment box on Vimeo. Go to firstname.lastname@example.org to indicate interest in this project.
Why Mass Hysterical?
This is a video funded by the United Church of Canada, celebrating church and church music, and it benefits the United Church! It is funny, cutting edge, Canadian, challenging yet respectful and unique. Just the idea of juxtaposing stand-up comedy and church is rare enough. Then you add the incredible history of church music performed by the talented members of the Toronto Symphony and soloists, and you get something extraordinary. AND all of it was filmed during Covid by each performer, at home, by themselves.
Mass Hysterical celebrates more than a thousand years of ecclesiastical music, taking a satirical but loving look at the repertoire, the composers, the personalities, and even the congregations themselves. The repertoire begins somewhere in the eighth century and marches through the years with nods to composers like Bach, Handel, and Mozart. This production includes a chamber ensemble from the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and four Second City veterans who perform a variety of songs, dialogue, and comedy. Special guest soloists Russell Braun and Julia Dawson are joined by the Mass Hysterical Chorus.

Churches across Canada and the world have been slammed by the pandemic. Some won’t survive. This idea benefits the producers of Mass Hysterical by getting it out to a wider audience and giving them needed revenue. At the same time, it is a creative, EASY way for hard-hit churches to make some much-needed dough. While funny (OK, darn right silly) at times it celebrates something that is fast disappearing in our secular culture – church, church culture and church music! The video was made on a shoestring budget with a loan from EDGE. In one night at the opening Gala, ticket sales completely paid back that loan! Now, any further ticket sales are pure profit just waiting to be made for the church. Please join us in this exciting venture.
